When I decided to do lockers, the front being 3:73 was fine, as this was the first ratio for the next gear bracket in lockers. The rear being 3:73 was the top notch in the bottom selection of locker, meaning that if I ever went to bigger tires and re-geared, I'd need to replace the rear locker. Since I didn't want to do that, I went to 35's and 4:56s. I love the way the 35's look and perform, but the gas mileage went to hell in a hand basket, and the top end is drastically diminished. I had the 35's on with 3:73s for a few days while I was waiting for the rest of my parts to ship, and it was friggen pig with that gearing; the 4:56s helped it get it's ass moving again, but with trade-offs. Unless you're planning to go bigger on the tires too, I would not change the gearing, as you're in a sweet spot right now.

I already bought the parts...just waiting for the time to get it all installed.

Right now I can't drive in O/D on the freeway. When I drive between 55-75 MPH I constantly turn of O/D. I figured out that in 3rd gear on the freeway the RPM at 70 MPH is a few hundred RPM higher than it would be in O/D with 4.56 gears. So I kinda already know what I'm getting into. Plus I tried driving one week with O/D off, and one with O/D on, and there was no change in fuel economy (around 14 MPG). But driving on the freeway was alot nicer in 3rd...no need to constantly stomp the throttle to keep up with traffic. It's so much nicer to only need a slight pedal movement to change speed.

I can,'t imagine the fuel economy on a 2005 TJ being any worse than 14 MPG with 33" tires.

Too bad Kelly got rid of his turbo XJ. We could've had the GL4x4 track day again.
