Most everything is printed in Spanish now. It is difficult to find the ENGLISH instructions on a lot of new items. Hell, even my daughters' toys speak Spanish now!! Where do you draw the line?

That assumes there is a hard and fast definition of what a political party is, which isn't the case. They evolve over time. The republican party today isn't what it used to be.

The republican party has a large base with the conservative christian religions, which is all about controlling your life.

...

There are many practical reasons to define a national language, other than wanting to "control your life." I honestly could give 2 shits about whatever language anyone wants to speak in their home. Defining a national language doesn't mean you can only speak in that language. It means that is the language with which the government will communicate with you, a citizen, which is perfectly reasonable. Unreasonable is immigrating here, becoming a citizen, not learning to speak a lick of English (which is what the voting, taxpaying majority speak), and then expecting everyone to bend over to cater to your language skills.

it occurred to me while thinking about this that the very existence of that Teddy Roosevelt quote somewhat proves my point. Obviously this is not a new issue. If he said that in 1919 it must have been an issue then. Obviously he was concerned about whether immigrants were assimilating into American society quickly enough or not. And I strongly suspect it was not Mexicans or Middle Easterners he was concerned with but rather Polish and Ukrainian and German and Italian and other Europeans, in short, "our" ancestors.

Mine came here between 1875 and 1903, I have no idea if they spoke
English when they got here. I'm pretty sure all spoke German as a first language and if they did speak English they probably didn't speak it well.
