Default exhuast pipe rollbar?

One of my coworkers (really, its not for me) wants me to weld up a front cage for his jeep using 14 gauge exhaust pipe. It measures .086 as opposed to the .12 most rollbars.

Do you feel this is safe. I told him rollbars only matter when your upside down and his answer was that he doesnt plan on rolling it.

I would still hate to put it in for him and have it do more harm than good.

thanks
kyle

Exhaust pipe and tubing are really two different things. Im sure someone else can elaborate on this but the steel used in tubing is different than what is used to make pipe. Plus the process to make them is different. Exhaust pipe isnt designed to hold weight, just to exhaust gases so the metal is soft and the side walls are too thin. Not only that but most exhaust pipe is galvanized and hard to weld. It would pretty much be useless in a roll over. Just go and buy a couple sticks of tubing, its not as cheap as exhaust pipe but it really isnt very expensive especially compared to buying a pre-made cage.

I agree. Dom versus rolled and welded. Just making sure my opinion was correct. He has an 85 cj7 with 35's and a built 360. I told him about the on from or-fab but i think he is trying to save money.

thanks

gay. tell him to use the correct stuff, buy one or don't do it. if he is that stupid he will end up rolling it and give wheelers more bad press.

Spork; I'd pass on doing that work for him. If his rig has 35's with a built 360 in it...and he's wanting a cheap roll-bar made of exhaust pipe? I'd say he's not very experienced and could get himself into trouble REAL quick and may need a solid roll-bar. When it folds like aluminum foil, and it will, he's gonna look at you.

Also, nobody "plans" on putting thier Jeep on the roof. It just happens!!!

he doesnt know and i just needed some other opinions to show him. He is new to the jeep thing. Bought a cj7, rebuilt the motor, put new tires and now wants the cage. A welder in town told him to use the 14 gauge exhaust pipe to save money.
