WTF...Dana 61?

I found a really good deal yesterday on what was advertised as a Dana 60 rear axle out of a 79 F250 for $25. My first thought was that there must be something wrong with it. ie broken shaft, cracked tube. etc. But for $25 I decided that I would go take a look at it. It appeared to be in excellent shape so I paid for my future CJ7 rear axle and went home. Today, after doing a lot of research, I find that I no longer own a Dana 60, I have a Dana61. WTF is a D61 and where do I find information on it? The only information I can find says that parts are not interchangeable with a 60 and good luck finding parts (Gears, carriers, Lockers etc.) for the 61. Has anyone had any experience with D61's?

They are not compatible with Dana 60 differential parts, but can be worked with. With gas mileage becoming an issue in the 70's, the Dana 61 was created to support gear ratios taller than what the Dana 60 was initially designed to handle. Read through both pages here. Most of the pertinent information is at the top of the second page.

It was for gear ratios taller 3.54, I had one in the front of a dodge cummins. I belive that every thing is the same just the pinion center line was moved over to support the higher gears, so you can run a ring gear spacer to run lower gears, I am not entirerly sure on that or what spacer you need.

It would be worth looking into considering the price you got it for. What you should research first is shaft compatibility, etc in case of breakage. Considering most people don't want to mess with them, you'll probably find that entire axles are cheaper than specific parts if you bust something.
