Default Morality: Religion vs. Not

Do you think that it is more impressive for an atheist/agnostic to live a good moral life than a christian, jew, muslim, hindu, buddhist, who is doing it because they think it will get them a better afterlife/life?

What is harder... doing it because you want to and it's how you roll or because you think a god will smite you if you don't?

Why are we asking what is impressive?

I think it is tragic if a person who makes a claim goes back on to break it, but is it also not tragic if others never stand for anything but make the same mistakes? It is easy to stand for nothing, because you can never be held to a standard.

Why do you think Christians are moral because they are scared not to be? That doesn't go hand in hand. You don't do things as a Christian because you are scared, you do them because they are right. Yes, if you don't do moral things and are a Christian then the Lord in your own words might smite you but it's still wrong regardless if you are a Christian or atheist/agnostic.

So to answer you question a Moral person impresses me more then a unmoral or nonmoral person.

my pastor uses an analogy that I like quite a bit.

much like a hospital is not for well people, a church is for sinners, both those that admit their sin, and repent, as well as those that act pious and holier than thou.

another take on it. "I'd rather sit in church with a couple of hypocrits, than go to hell with millions"

I would rather live a moral life on my own accord as opposed to living it because an argumentatively fictional book said so.

If there is a hell there better be alot of unmoral hypocritical bastards burning in it soon or it serves no purpose.

unfortunatly it does not seem that the belief in a supreme being and the desire to live a moral life necassarily go togeather.

But I won't be taking part in you pole because as usual your question is baiting people into an erronious either/or proposition. The implication that a religious person is only moral because they want to get to heaven is false.

x2 - actually one reason I have not attended in some time (10 years or so). Seen too many that were like that and got patted on the back by the leadership.
