Default The "Draft??"

First, I'm not a Hillary Clinton fan, but I must have missed Bush mentioning the draft being an option at all???

WASHINGTON (CNN) – New York Sen. Hillary Clinton said Monday that President Bush needs to clarify recent comments from an administration official saying the military draft "has always been an option on the table."

In a letter to Bush dated Monday, Clinton writes, "While our forces, in particular the Army and Marine Corps, are under strain, re-establishing a draft is not the answer. The seeds of many of the problems that continue to plague our mission in Iraq were planted in the failure to adequately plan for the conflict and properly equip our men and women in uniform."

"In previous years, when asked about a draft, your Administration has stated that it is the Administration’s policy to oppose a military draft and support the all-volunteer force," the presidential frontrunner added. "Given Lieutenant General Lute’s comments last week, I ask that you clarify whether there has been a change in your Administration’s opposition to reinstituting a draft."

On Friday, Deputy National Security Adviser Douglas Lute told National Public Radio, "I think it makes sense to certainly consider [the draft.]"

"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," added Lute, who is sometimes referred to as the "Iraq war czar."

It was his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.

The United States ended the draft in 1973. Restoring it, Lute said, would be a "major policy shift" — one that Bush has made clear he doesn't think is necessary.

"Until recently the rare calls for a return of the draft have come from liberals, who see the existence of a professional military as one reason there was so little public opposition to the US invasion of Iraq."

So let's get this straight. The liberals have shown an interest in reinstating the draft. Why? Because the majority of the people in the military are there because they want to be. If we were to force people to join the military, against their will, there would be a lot more opposition to the war????

That's just fucked up.

I don't understand why we just don't go over there and check their country in. Send the inhabitants to reservations and let them open casinos in exchange for their land. It wouldn't be the first time its happened.

And last election, all of the liberals kept insisting Dubya was going to institute a draft in order to mobilize 18-22 year-old voters. All bullshit.

Today's military is not set up for a draft. Today's military has eliminated the bullshit jobs formerly reserved for useless draftees. They've outsourced a lot of the low-skilled jobs. They make little to no effort to retain misfits - the volunteer military is a more skilled and professional military.

the military draft "has always been an option on the table."

No shit, the draft is always an option during wartime but that doesn't mean we have to use it. talk about using something out of context. Dropping an A bomb is an option too...

I wish someone would use the option of life in prison and rid the world of her.

Every option is always on the table. Same with nuclear weapons. This is just a little attempt to scare people into being afraid of Republicans, you know - because they want to draft your kids. Give me a break.

The truth is if we were fighting a war that had any real support among the populous a draft would be completely unnecessary.

Who remembers reports of Americans falsifying their age just so they could get into the military and defend our country in WWII ??

The real truth is:
The Armed forces are a 100% voluntary force, the draft IS completely unnecessary.

There is real support among the populous, at least among the people who understand what is really going on in the world today.

I agree with you that this story is generated to scare people. This is part of the effort to make the war unpopular, there by making the Republican's unpopular; to give the democrat's more votes and more power to govern as they wish.

It's politics, nothing more.

Because, since we don't make anything here anymore, we would have to pay too much for imported beads to pay them.
