How often you gonna tow and how often will it get driven while not towing? The hp and tq numbers are pretty close on those two engines for over 2L difference in displacement.

The only way I would get a 8.1L is if it had an allison behind it.

Its a tow rig only. My wife and I both have other vehicles to drive to work/everyday. As a matter of fact we have 5 vehicles..someone want to buy one?:tonka: My current Suburban has been sitting for almost two weeks. Wont get driven again to July 4th holiday weekend when we go camping. So gas mileage isn't really a concern to me. I only get 13mpg not towing and 7mpg towing with my 1500 and 5.7L. If unloaded gas mileage was a concern, I would pony up the extra cash and get a Excursion with 7.3L PS.

I do agree with the Allison behind the 8.1L, as you only get the 4L80E behind the 8.1L in the Suburbans. But I'm not totally sold on Allison either as we blew up one at work with only 90k on it....it was behind a 8.1L. $4500 for a new one...I could of bought two 4L80E for that.

Suburbans with a 8.1L have 3.73 gears...Suburbans with 6.0L mostly have 4.10 gears....so gas mileage is about the same between the two......shitty. The 6.0L in 2500 Suburbans don't even get the 4L80E...they only get the 4L60E, at least thats what I have been told.

If you look back at the '01/'02 engines the 8.1L has something like 90 more ft lbs of torque(360 to 450)...thats a lot. Plus its at a lower rpm then the 6.0L.

sorry for the ramble, and thank you for your input Scot...its alway appreciated.

I just find that the bigger engines will do better on mileage in those situations.

My V8 ram got 8 mpg towing with 4.11 gears, my V10 ram gets 10 mpg with 3.55 gears, actually got 11 mpg towing 250 miles with an 8000 lb trailer. I only get 11-12 mpg empty, though. Towing 65 mph @ 1700 rpm is effortless.

Buy the big block over those earlier 6.0s.

well I wasnt towing to get that....guess I should have said that :miff:...I got almost 19 in the suburban I owned previously to the V10.

I did the same thing to both, K&N air filter, mobil 1 full synthetic oil and Bosch Platinum +4 plugs (that was expensive on the ford )

okay gonna bring this one back up as my wife is set on an Excursion. She's been looking lately:miff:

V10 or Powerstroke. It will sit most of the time so gas mileage isn't really a concern.. I've been looking and to get a 7.3L Ex under $20k it has over a 100k and doesn't have some options my wife wants like leather etc. But I can find a newer V10 loaded with 50k miles for around $15-16K. I like the less miles and more options.....plus the cheaper price.

Of course the one my wife wants is an '04 Limited with 6.0L PS, quad seating, DVD player, backup sensor, etc......damn thing is $35k. Plus I don't want a 6.0L PS. I'm gonna keep looking for 7.3L PS to see what I find with more options and good pricing. My wife is set on a diesel....trying to change her mind

i was looking at them a while back. it seemed like you could get a 00-02 limited v10 with 80k on the ticker for around 12k. thats the route i'd go...but i'm a cheap ass. btw the v10's are a very good, reliable motor.

The v10 excursion really is underpowered. Hell, I think 80% of the final MY run was all diesels. The god damned thing is a tank in itself. It's weight makes it a good tow vehicle, but you need the diesel really to have the power. I think the 6.0L is better than the 7.3L myself too.

I like the power of the 6.0L over the 7.3L....but I don't want all the problems associated with the 6.0L.

if you can get a later model 6 it wouldn't be a problem. It was really in the first 3-6 month ones that had issues.

Keep watching on cars.com etc... We looked around for them as well. I wouldn't even dream of buying the V10. I didn't notice many of the V10's with mileage over 100k. Many of the diesels had a ton of miles. Tells me that the diesels last longer. We did see a few with 60-80k miles in the $24-26k range. Just not many. Many dealers think these are worth their weight in gold for some reason.

Something to keep in mind... I have 150K trouble-free miles on my 7.3, Bones had over 300k on his truck, blah blah blah.

Talk to Detroit - he has a 7.3 excursion.

The powerstroke also doesn't really get broken in until after 100k miles too.

I don't mind over 100k on the PS....its the rest of the truck with that many miles I don't want. If I could find a 7.3L with leather interior for under 20k I'm in

It is possible to get into a crew cab silverado with the duramax for that price range now..... something to consider, however its probably not enough seating?

I would love a truck...but with 4 kids its cramped. Then there is no room for grandma, grandpa, cousin, friend or whoever might go with the 6 of us.

Go with the Suburban. Powere you'll be fine either way....but the Excursion's suspension sucks for towing. At work we refer it to having the Soccer Mom Suspension.

A Suburban with a 8.1L would be my choice...........but the wife doesn't want a Suburban. She wants an Excursion because its bigger and meaner looking. Those are her words. And she wants a diesel, because diesels are cool...again her words:tonka:
