Default Hidden treasure in Owosso!

http://www.mstrp.com/

I visited this railroad museum today and took my camera. I don't think it's worth a drive from Detroit or Grand Rapids, but it's definitely worth a trip if you're local. These were some of the nicest people I've met. They really want you to enjoy yourself. If anything go just to support a local museum with your tourist dollars! Admission is only $5. Train rides are more, but not prohibitively expensive.

All pics taken and processed by me. Unless they suck. Then I have no idea where they came from....

Locomotive letting off steam after a day's work.

Caboose, backing up. (You rarely see them in use anymore. I still don't know why.)

This beast, the Pere Marquette, was used for the sound effects in the movie "The Polar Express". As far as I know it was numbered 1225 well before the Christmas movie. I'm 6'2 and was standing upright when I took these shots, holding the camera at eye level. This thing is a MONSTER!

You were 2 blocks from my house... that engine is driven in front of my house from Thanksgiving to Christmas every year The engine did carry that number long before the movie, they wanted the number on the engine in the movie too... but it didn't happen for some reason.

Looks cool....but 414.37 miles is a tad far to go to see a choo-choo.

We rode the Pere Marquette out of Farwell a few years ago.
That engine is huge, it gives you a sense it's alive when it's sitting "Idling"

The Drive wheels measure 69 inches.
Two cylinders 26 inch bore and 34 inch stroke.
3000 hp
69,350 ft/lbs torque

1 ton of coal / 12 miles

That train comes through Grayling in the fall, for the color tour. Rode it last fall. The Main Street America theme park developers plan to have a rail siding in the park, so passengers can take the "Polar Express" right to the world's largest Christmas tree, just like the movie. The tracks run right through the cemter of the proposed park. :chiefwoohaw:

I can't believe there haven't been any "I'd wheel it" comments...
