Default Explorer Trans Problems

Lately my trans has had a problem of the TC not locking up. It comes and goes, about every few days.
Today, I lost OD, and the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts were very harsh. I got where I was going, and when I drove home, it wouldn't shift at all. I revved it to over 5000rpm and finally got it to shift into second, the same for third. I stopped and tried to shift it manually, which worked but again a harsh shift. I got home fiddled with it, couldn't find a problem, so I took it out for another run. It did the same thing again, I stopped, eased it (basically just above idle), and it shifted normally. Now, it drives normal, except still no TC lockup.
Any ideas?
What have others experienced just before their tranny cooked?
If the trans is bad, there's no way I can afford to fix it. It will either become a parts truck, or I'll park it and maybe throw a wicked 302/C4 in it next year.

I had a 94 Exploder with the A4LD trans that experienced the same kind of crap your talking about. If that is what trans you have, sell the POS now and save yourself some time, money, and headaches. After getting a rebuilt from a "reputable shop", I made it 142 miles. On road not off. After he replaced it again, I made it a touch over 200 miles before it took a dump again. I donated that MFer to a Vo-Tech center in Lapeer and took the tax credit. No offense, if you like it, fix it, but me personnaly, I wouldn't piss on another Explorer if it were on fire. Good luck

One more thing, if it is the A4LD and you decide to tackle it yourself, I have the ATSG for it, you can have it for what it costs to mail it, just PM me your address if ya want it

Thanks, but I don't do transmissions. I know my limitations, and trannys are waay beyond it. ;)
Anyway, I changed the filter last night and made some adjustments. It's acting better now, but still no TC lockup. I'm going to try changing the speed sensor and see if that's it. If not, it gets parked and may be next year's project.

I think I found a cause. If I wiggle the ground wires coming from the neg side of the battery, the TC will work again. I'm thinking that may be the problem. Anyone ever heard of that? It has the wrong battery size on it, so the battery moves around and jerks on the wires.
