It looks like your pinion gear was set improperly.

Your pinion bearing is shot.

When I saw how bad your pinion seal was, I kinda expected it....

Yea, it's fixable...prolly can't do it yourself, but it's fixable.

FWIW...I saved those pics to use in one of my lessons next year to show what a diff isn't supposed to look like.:tonka:

just so everyone knows, this jeep has 277xxx miles on it, and it sat for four years before i got it, so... ya, i dont think the mileage and the prob lack of care helped me out too much

what gears are those, 3.07's?? i think i have another carrier w/ 3.07 gears on it if you want to pay the shipping. i'm pretty sure it'd fit into the flat rate bow at the post office for $10ish.

a friend of mine called me and told me to check the backlash on the gears, b/c they still spin around easily. b/c someone before me could have blew the axle up and rebuilt it w/ a knarly carrier

Good point...although it looks like the end of the pinion has wear on it...might be gear lube though. Can't tell.

When you were doing your seal, could you move the pinion around before you pulled the bolt off? Can you now? That much play...you won't need to do any backlash measurement...just grab the pinion yolk and see of it chucks in and out.

I already had the yoke off, and i put the new one on, b/c I am going to be picking up a '92 8.25, and I only need this axle to last me a couple weeks, to mostly move the jeep around, so im not too worried about it right now. I think it might of moved in and out a little bit, and there was some wear on the pinion, i got the new yoke on there real good, so it isnt movin too much, just side to side b/c of the backlash, and the rotation of the driveshaft, no in and out action
