Default Mounds Rock Crawl update [RFP's out]

Here's the update on the rock crawl course @ the Mounds. I've been hounding the Director as you'll see.
Now's the time for those who have contracting companies to become in the single most exciting project that 4 wheelers in Michigan have going.
It looks like the specificitation for the course have been identified and they may be looking for bidders very shortly.
I will try to get a copy of the RFP so I understand what it is they are asking for. We were never consulted as to the content of the course so it will be interesting to see what the RFP contains.
We are less than 60 days till the 2008 Grants need to be submitted. Unless GCP&R prempts the bids and submits a 'estimated' $$ amount for the course construction we might miss out on the Grant Application this year. Let's wait and see before rumors start to fly.
So who's going to bid??????????

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I promise that I am not ignoring, you, Jim. We have been very busy getting ready for the launch of the summer season.

The RFP [Request For Proposal] for the design of the rock course is in the process of approval by the County's Purchasing Department. Due to the anticipated cost of the design, County Purchasing Policies require us to issue a formal RFP. It is a fairly lengthy process as the Purchasing Department is basically a one person operation due to budget cuts and is responsible for all of the County's major purchasing, not just the County Parks.

I know that this is frustrating, but we are committed to making this project happen. I think that the Parks Commission has been very consistent in its commitment to the Mounds and hope that track record will give you the confidence that we will get this project built.

If there are any interested contractors that would like to bid on the project
they should contact Genesee County Purchasing Director Eric Hopson. His email address is: ehopson@co.genesee.mi.us

Even though I am not a 'crawler, thanks for your efforts on this Jim.

Where was it they are putting it there? Was it by the first scramble area to the left as you enter?

GCP&R originally wanted it back by the big long mud hole. I argued that it was closer to the residents there and would only cause more dust and traffic. I had the residents on my side on this. I suggested it should be just east or to the right of the motorcycle scramble area. By the concrete slab only further in, incorporate the bowl area, like putting rocks on the hills in the bowl. Then use some of the flat area near there to have the tamer stuff. I have yet to see where they think it works the best.

Jim in the past when this started I spoke with a couple contractors I work with about the project. If it goes out for an actual bid I can get some people to bid on it. Work is slow, people in the excavating/landscaping/etc business are dying to get work.

Guy @ GCP&R in charge of bidders list is in e-mail from Amy. Just send him an e-mail requesting to be added to the list once the proposal finalized by Planning it will go out. Heck I put my bame in there, why not? There are NO real rock course builders from what I've been able to determine. It' s brand new field.
In fact I encougage anyone in the landscape business to at least look at submit a quote, all except HJ, he now gone into to dock and seawall building!

Jim - Is there anything us Genesee County residents can do to help push it along? It doesn't sound like it, but I thought I would ask anyways.

Based on how little he sold his buggy for, maybe it'd be a good idea for him to quote it. He could probably build something like Tellico for about $15K.

Right now the wheels of progress in county government are just turning slowly. But it is better than St. Helen which I've now heard through the grapevine they (DNR) are worried about liability!

maybe an email to the "rich's" would be in order since they are pretty much some of the only "course designers" around. If nothing else, some input would be valuable.

That would be awesome, a We-Rock course at the Mounds. They could become the Arnold Palmer's of the offroad world. (course designers..)

Will do that once RFP is out. Side note, Big Rich talked to DNR about St. Helen site. DNR said thanks, now we want to hear from 'other' rock course design experts.

I talked to Big Rich about 6 - 8 weeks ago.
He said he could do it AND doubted he would have any trouble meeting the Departments concerns about oil spill mitigation.
He said I could fwd his personal cel phone number to the Dept, so I gave it to Steve K.
Steve stated, at the AB meeting, that he'd already given a copy if it to GCP&R.

Jim's right.
A wide open field for any who want to try their hand.
Keep in mind that you'll probably have to deal with the DNR's desire for oil spill mitigation in your design.

Anyone want to do a little online research?

Try to find rock crawl builders around the country?
When I get a minute I want to ask Urock, but time's at a premium lately.

Post em if you find em!

Oil spill regs must be somewhat in the ballpark of landfill regs. Some type of visqueen (spelling?) Barrier to keep oil, gas and other contaminants at bay untill a cleanup. Then Who's gonna cleanup and how and where does the petrolium go and etc ..etc.. etc..
