It does not need to be discharged...not that it friggin matters, but at work we used to just flip them into a sink. its acid proof from the old days. we used baking soda by the ton. once its neutral its pull the plug and off it goes. we order all our batteries dry now.

I killed a battery once by hooking it up to the charger and setting the timer for 2 hours. the timer didnt work, and the battery melted on the shop floor. there was alot of smoke.

uh, wal-mart. i took one back for my dad that he had in his cummins. they dont care as long as you have the receipt and warranty.

The receipt was in the little receipt holder on the side of the battery. No way for them to know who bought it. +1 for non-computerized record keeping.
