Default Memorial Day inspiration

Since Memorial day is almost here I thought it was a good time to share a video that was made about my cousin that was killed in Iraq last year. It has been almost a year and I still think about him every day. So Memorial Day from now on will be very special to me.

The guy who wrote the song has become a very good friend of the family. He is truly an amazing person. We cannot thank him enough for everything he has done for my aunt and uncle. His website is HERE

YouTube Video

The song was inspired by this poem that Raymond wrote about a year before he died.

this is me this is who i am
i am a Marine to the very end

i will live, i will fight, i will kill, i will die
i live by the motto that is Semperi Fi

i come to countries in far off lands
to fight for freedom for which most are to scared to stand

do not judge me for what i do
for what i do i do for you

i will kill for those who cannot kill
i will die for those to scared to

i will leave my loved ones, my kids, my wife
i will leave them all behind to give you a better life

i have seen and done things that will haunt my dreams
i have given up many things for you to be free

do not feel pity for me, for this is my choice
i chose this life so people like you can have a voice

i will die on my feet, i will not live on my knees
i will do this so America can stay free

this is me this is who i am
i am a Marine to the very end

-Sgt. Raymond Plouhar-

that was pretty awesome. anyone else here willing to admit they teared up?

Not just over that video/poem, but over the knowledge of how many similar stories there are?

To those that have served, thank you.

X2 Jeeprat shared with me this story one year ago, but since I wasn't a member yet I couldn't reply. Now I can... Thank you very much for sharing Romey. It is such an awesome story, poem/song. And eventhough your cousin is not physically here anymore, he will always be in the people's heart. My deepest respect for all the ones that have served You just can't thank enough for those who have given in their lives in war.

Romey, Just got home for the memorial ceremony at the VA's Great Lakes National Cemetery. [This is a Veteran cemetery that is larger than Arlington national]

The director of the cemetery, Rick Anderson, right before the service started, told Raymond's story and they played "don't pity me" [twice back to back].

There were several men and women [maybe 20 or more] there with black tee-shirts bearing the Marine EGA on the front and the words of Raymond's Poem on the back.

The service had more brass there than a jazz band, including generals, senators, and Representatives for the Governor.

Knowing Raymond's story made it difficult to maintain my composure when the song played. Please be sure to relay my [and many others] thanks to his family for his sacrifice.

I was out there as well. I wish I would have been home earlier to post that I was going out there then maybe we could have met out there. I was sitting in the back left corner looking at the stage. My family pretty much all had on Memorial MARINE tee shirts. My mom, sister and I were walking up when the song was playing. That was awesome.
