Default Applause neccesary to Catherine Crier...

For letting people know, Imus isn't the only one saying stupid, hateful, racist, sexist, and just plain ignorant things on air.

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/0...t-wing-bigots/

"Let's tell hate spewing radio and TV hosts, and misogynist rappers that this divisiveness is unacceptable."

and to MediaMatters with their article. "It's not just Imus"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200704120010

This is a pretty good list.

Calling bigcountry O'Donnell "fat" is racist? Is "fat" now a race?

Oh come on, the entire Imus thing just highlights the increasing power of the liberal-driven de-facto censorship that's occurring in this country. The alleged restrictions (I've yet to see a factual account of a CITIZEN being denied any rights yet) of personal freedoms driven by the Patriot Act pale in comparison to the witch hunts occurring today.

Imus screwed up - and needs to pay the price. He insulted those girls for no good reason - they weren't asking for it either thru their words or actions. Should he have been fired? That's up to his employers - he screwed up in a highly public way while on the job and alienated customers (advertisers) of his employer. He was (is, depending upon the terms of his contract where I expect he's still drawing full pay for the duration of the term) a highly compensated guy and there are big risks to go along with big rewards.

She says that we have the right to say whatever we want, but that doesn't mean that we should be subjected to the equivalent of verbal garbage.

and, yes, it is up to these people's employers to determine whether or not they remain employed, but their employers are, indirectly, us. If we don't like what people are saying, we can simply turn it off or complain that we don't like it, and they might get off the air sooner.

Honestly, if we're going to get to the point here, all that happened was that Imus' rights of free speech were violated.

He can say whatever he wants (no matter how stupid).

If you use the word "fag" now at public universities, you can be arrested and kicked out for hate crimes. Where have my rights to free speech gone? Has anyone seen them?

The libs like to say whatever they want, no matter how treasonous, about the president and the war and how they think our enemies should win, etc. But when something stupid and small like this happens, were are the liberal protectors of free speech?

I'm done ranting

well, then how were Imus's freedom of speech rights violated? We the people complained about it, MSNBC assessed the situation, realized that the viewers weren't liking what they were seeing and saw the sponsors drop, so they dropped Imus. That's how it works.

He still has his radio show.

i think you are forgetting the resposibility that goes along with the freedom of speech you are able to excercise. We all have the right to say whatever we please, what we all tend to forget is that those things we say usually carry consequences that we have to endue.
Imus, and anyone else has the right to say what they please. What he forget to do (and what gets alot of people in trouble) is weight the consequences of his words BEFORE he opened his mouth.
He said what he pleased, now he's got to pay the consequences. It's that way for anyone. You can go into a crowded club full of black people and yell the N word. You have the right to do that. BUT, you also need to realize that you will pay the consequences for the freedom to say that.

Nobody is suffering from a violation of their freedoom of speech. It's just that in this day and age, nobody thinks they have to be responsible for anything they say or do. When someone is held accountable for their actions and/or speech, they get all pissed off and whine that their freedoms are being taken away.

Nope.

CBS "cancelled" the radio show - meaning he's off the air but (unless he had a really bad lawyer and really, really weak contract) getting paid.

I'll offer that the hoopla and outcry amounts to an attempt by the media elite to stifle his 1st Amendment rights, but that the government (correctly) stayed out of it. What we collectively have to remember that while there is a freedom of speech, and there are consequences for speaking, there is no right to be protected from having your feelings hurt or hearing something that you don't like or agree with. That's the craziness that's getting out of control.

His employer's actions are capitalism at work.

You are correct sir. I change my previous statement. I guess what really bothers me is the hypocrocy of the media.

A specific example is of Al Sharpton accusing the Duke players of rape. Now that they have been found innocent, he says nothing. No "I'm sorry" or anything. The media doesn't even bring it up because they are scared of Al Sharpton!!

Doesn't make any sense.

A lot of people accused them of rape, including our government, did they issue an apology?

Anyone catch the intro sketch on SNL Saturday night. Great mockery of Sharpton and Jackson. Basically they were blasting Imus and stated that because of him being fired the rap community will clean up there act because nothing puts fear into a rapper like the firing of a 60 yr old white guy.

I don't think what he said was very nice, rappers say wworse about their own community but as long as the government doesn't step in to penalize him it is capitalism and liberal media at work not a loss of his personal freedom.

I really want to list every racial slur I know in this thread...and watch how people react to certain ones. I can bet that polock and diego will be ok, but "insert racial slur here" and spick won't.

Question is, did the people who complained listen to Imus?

I don't listen to him, I saw his show on TV a few times and continued moving because it was boring. In the end, it was just a big witch hunt. It was a tasteless joke, they got him fired, now the media can move on to the next topic.
