97 and newer - 29 spline. Older ones are 27. People compare their strength to a D44.

If you have a 29 spline, only lunchbox locker available is a powertrax no-slip. Cheapest price is at rocky road.

I wheeled my XJ fairly hard for 2 years and never had an axle problem, but I never ran tires bigger than 32's.

Silly rubber plug on diff cover.

You can replace the cover with an earlier on with a fill plug- Chrysler has made the 8 1/4 since the early 70s.

I believe you can get ARB lockers now actually.

I think cherokee666 has one in the rear of his jeep.

I bought a steal pipe reducer from Home Depot and welded it on to the cover and then just used a pipe plug, that I also bought from H.D.

They have quite a few XJ's at parts galore over by my house Yogi. I can see if they have some 29 spline's there.

I have the 29 spline with a Detroit and the cheap 99.00 Alloy axles. Run 35's and have had 0 problems.

Just buy this MJ D44.

You have to put perches on it anyway, so you can set the pinion angle to exactly what you want at the same time.

I like the 8.25 I have. I've got the 27 spline and run 33" locked and have no troubles. The shafts end up neckin down to smaller than a D44 shaft but I havent broken one yet. Plus the axle is easy to build cause there are no carrier shims. Just a large screw over the bearing to set your backlash.
