Default NBA Player Has An Opinion - So What?

So everyone has their panties in a bunch over this Hardaway NBA player saying he doesn't like gays.

Doesn't free speech apply here?

He's an entertainment personality (yes, professional sports are "entertainment") and he has an opinion - one that he expressed. Last I heard, that was allowed.

Now, as an entertainer, he runs the risk of alienating some part of his audience through expressing his opinions - a risk he;s free to take. But not allowing him to play in the All Star game because of his opinions seems wrong.

If he said "George Bush hates black people" or "Catholic priests are all perverts" there would've been no issue - in fact he would'e been applauded.

I can't help but see this as a media witch hunt.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that we give these athletes too damn much attention as it is. We pay them to play, not speak out on what they like or not. Funny thing is, he's most likely getting blasted for this as it is thought unbecoming a role model.

I think it is stupid. Society is getting to danged liberal for its own good.

You missed the point - it's not whether you agree with his opinion or not, it 's the way the press is attacking him for speaking his mind.

Or maybe the way everyone in the PC world has disowned him including the NBA, Miami Heat . .. etc. Did you hear the statement Pat Riley made?

Wow, I hardly follow sports at all, and NBA ever less, but so far most of you have no idea what you're talking about.

First, it was Tim Hardaway, not Penny Hardaway, that made the comment.
Second, since Tim Hardaway retired about 4 years ago he wasn't playing in this years NBA allstar game to begin with. He was going, as a former allstar, to represent the league at events related to the allstar game.

I don't care that any athlete, actor, musician, or any other entertainer thinks about anything. They have the right to free speach to say what they want, and the rest of us also have the right to free speach to say what we think about what they said.

And the NBA has the right to choose who represents them based on what that person says and thinks.

Bruce, you get two guesses on what Tim Hardaway's nickname is, but you will only need just one.

When you are on TV/Radio/Whatever, you can't say things the offend people!

Whats next? Mel Gibson saying he hates Jews? Same thing.

According to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Hardaway it's "bug"

and according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Hardaway, Penny Hardaways real name is Anfernee Deon Hardaway.

But what do I know, I don't follow basketball.

The lefties preach freedom of speech, yet when someone says something they don't agree with, they flip out. So now who is the ones trying to force beliefs on others?

The great thing about freedom of speech is it's a 2 way street. You have the right to say what you want, and I have the right to say what I think about what you said.
