ford truck problem

Ok i just bought a 1990 f-250 4 x 4 with a 302 and a aod trans (auto) The problem i am having is when it is idiling it runs "great" and when i first take off it is hell on wheels, when i get up to speed around 40 or so and i go to punch it (to pass some one) it feels and acts like i am towing a 20 ton trailer, it just takes for ever to pass, the trans doesnt slip, the rear end is good. I am thinking that the cats are clogged, what do you guys thinks

Thanks for the help

Thats what I would guess. Drop the exhaust off the manifolds and retry.
Or use a vacuum gauge. If its clogged, the vacuum gauge will drop down to a low vacuum instead of coming back up when you get up to speed.

since its fuel injected you may get it to do it sitting in the driveway. just rev it up in park when its warmed up and see if it slows the engine down when you get to around 3000 rpms I would guess cat or Fuel filter.

You said AOD, are you sure its not the E04d?
Anyway,..........I had a similar situation, I could have sworn I had thrown an anchor out the back tied to a chain when it shifted into 3rd. It was one of the Planetary gears,.........it had cracked, so it was still working but not very well.
