This thing almost seems too good to be true.

850 cu in displacement
500 hp
814 ft-lb torque

Weighs 135 lbs!!

The guy said that it has only been run on a dyno with compressed air, not with any combustible. They plan on using a biodiesel mix that will serve as fuel and lube!

I was wondering how they would cool that damn thing. Most IC engines are around 45% thermally efficient in real life, at 500 hp thats alot of heat to dump from such a small mass of engine. (But what do I know)

That's twisted... but interesting. With 850 cu in of displacement, 500HP - 814 ft lbs of torque doesn't seem too far out of reach, but with air?. I'll have to keep an eye on this... (I agree it does seem too good to be true)

Interesting design, but I have some questions about it. The one cut away picture on the home page looks like the cylinder and piston rod connection is questionable.
I don't really see any difference between a conventional radial piston engine (like in old airplanes), except the complicated piston/cylinder arrangement. Maybe fewer parts, but more complicated parts. The HP is not extrordinary for the displacement.
(800 cid engines can easily produce 800 HP). The weight is misleading, since this is just the block core - in Alumnium. A steel block would probably be better for a disel.
People come out with clever designs once and a while. The basic fact is that a conventional enine is pretty efficient and hard to improve on. Its special feature is that it can operate at a very broad RPM and power range. Most other types of engines have a very limited RPM ranges where they operate at maximum efficiency. (or at all) A Jet engine is a good example. Getting torque at low RPMs is a trick etc.
The Mazada wankle clearly had some HP advantages, but was less efficient and required very special thin film coatings on the strange cylinder walls and seals that had a limited lifespan - not rebuidable.
