they sell cut offs. if you can get to the jackson we have a cashway store on Ganson & Wisner. its got a majority of cut offs that they make in the other places. you have to remember that most metals come in 24' lengths in order to ship them. sheet steel comes in rolls and bar stock is ussally 12' if its hardened pipe or tool steel. the last time I bought square tube it was $.30 a pound in the cut off bin.

Look through the dozen or so other similar posts about 'where can I find steel' ,etc.

I wouldn't go to a scrapyard, as they probably just paid someone for that steel, and don't usually sell it back. Just go to a steel yard.

My personal favorite is Pontiac Steel. Its about 50 cents a pound for cutoffs on the shorter racks. Then they have a garbage bin with small chunks that are free. Go in, buy a few pieces off the short rack, then ask for some small scraps for welding.

If you are learning to weld and fabricate, then the best thing is having a lot of steel around. If its saturday night and you are working on the truck, you don't want to not have some material for what you need.

In my garage, I usually have on hand:

1.5" square - 0.120 wall
2.0" square - 0.250 wall
1.0" sqaure - 0.080 wall
1-1/4" sch 40 pipe
2-1/2" sch 40 pipe (for driveshafts)
0.250" plate
thin sheetmetal
2" x 0.250" angle
1.5" x 0.120" angle
1" x 0.125" bar stock
2" x .375" bar stock (good for making shackles)
6" x 0.5" plate
3" x 1" bar stock (those last two are usually for recovery points)
and a big bin of all the scraps from the years.

Now I need to build up stock of solid rounds for my lathe..

I called Alro once for a couple of 12"x12" pieces of 1/4" and they quoted me $80. I called Hill Steel or something like that it was $20. Alro likes the big orders, at least the one in Grand Blanc does.

Alro is crazy expensive for new pieces, cutoffs not so bad. I had them quote me $220 for 2 - 6'x12" wide pieces press broke into a 90* down the middle (rockrails). I ended up buying from a place in Wisconsin and had them shipped to my house - Total cost was $60.

Don't know where "school" but in Lansing we have Padnos. It's a metal recycling center and they have a large pile of scraps. Alot of it is total junk but you can find stuff for practice and small projects. It's $0.20 a pound. They sell new there too and will cut it to length. Price depends on steel and the cuts (beyond the cut to length cut) cost a $1.00 I think.

I bought a 19.5" x 9.5" x 2.5" block of alluminum, $200, from Alro. it was a similar sized piece to what I needed. That was a cutoff block just lying around.

That was a funny day when the dorms recieved THAT package lol..
