I can do what I want.

I'm the only guy in the shop with a passport, LOL.

What ever happened to respecting your employer and doing a day's work for a day's pay? I'm all for a radio at a work station as long as it is not disruptive to anyone else. I remember being able to concentrate better on work with a radio on. But cell phone use? No, do it on your break or lunch.

Blanket policies are bullshit. Handle the actual problem.

I've been at the shop I'm at now for 10 years. No rules about radio or phones. Hell you can show up when you want. As long as your work gets done that's all the matters. The owners are very good at telling you good job. It's nice to be appreciated as an employee and not treated like a slave. Best place I've ever worked.

That basically sums up my place of employment. I've been there for 9 years this November.

If you treat your employees like a piece of shit then you're only going to have shitty employees sticking around.

This. Part of the reason people feel they are owed something probably resides in the fact that real wages have not kept pace with inflation so a technical job 10 yrs ago rivals the pay at Hobby Lobby now, especially up here.

You guys are drifting off topic. Being an ass to employees is another matter. When I punch in, I expect to work until I punch out. Do I expect breaks? No. Do I expect fans or AC on a hot day? No. Do I expect <insert another perk not mandated by law>. If you get paid by the work you put out and you put out good work, I would hope your employer would grant perks to entice you to stay. In my circumstances, I have a shop full of entry level people who are doing work they could never accomplish if they were set loose on their own. We (I) break down the jobs and simplify them so I can have anyone run specific small parts of a larger part. The people that work here are paid to do just that. We treat everyone to longer lunches on Friday's, cook on the grill, buy donuts a few days a week, free coffee, let people work on personal projects after hours, etc... Being a dick to people is different than trying to maintain an efficient, distraction free environment. My .02

Do as you see fit and screw the bitchy employees. They provide a service that you pay for; the problem you describe enforces this. You expect "x" amount of work done per hour, that work pays "y" dollars.

If you can track the time wasted from unnecessary phone usage and chart it, you have proof they are not providing the service you are paying for. Seems obvious to me and almost everybody else.

It sounds like a great place to work with pretty good benefits that you provide because you're a good employer. Hell, it sounds like you let them show up late! Do it. Enforce it, but get buy-in from the owner so he's not undermining your authority and what HE'S paying YOU to do!

Pretty much how it is where I work. Except for the shoe when you want part, I'm the only hourly employee with that perk. But then, I often put in 16 hour days, so they don't mind if I sleep in when I get back from the road.

I drive a city bus, no phones, Bluetooth or one headphone is allowed. Most drivers use both tho to listen to radios/music.

They don't say anything to radios on the dash as long as the public doesn't complain about noise or selection. I drove shuttle for the ceasars here in Windsor prior to city service and they said no music cus someone had bible thumping happening and someone complained.

Once in a while ill throw my headphone(s) in if I'm on a quiet run and don't wanna be bothered.

We used to be told no cell phones. But we kept ignoring the rule, but only when passengers were not in the area. Eventually supervisors changed the policy to cell-phone use is ok as long as there are no passengers.
