Default NP231J tcase XJ vs YJ/TJ

I know these came in 21 spline and 23 spline, but is the bolt clocking the same?

wanting to put one from an XJ with AW4 onto an AX15 out of a TJ or YJ.

Will I need a clocking ring?
any other differences?

I've heard mixed answers, don't have the items sitting here to compare.

Clocking is the same on the actual cases (xjs are different only because of the mounting on aw4 side). Ive heard of different length shafts over the years too. Might be best to swap your input to be safe, at least compare them.

well, I'm asking because my nephew is in Chicago, with an 87 YJ, he needs a 23 spline NP231J for an AX15 he has swapped into the YJ, I have one out of an XJ, trying to verify if it is worth sending him, since the 2 are not siting near each other to compare. I figured I would be able to get a better answer from some of the experts here.

I wanted to search it, but since the search isn't currently working...

The input shafts lengths are different I believe. Otherwise the same.

There are short (1.2" from mounting face), medium (1.7"), and long (2.1") input shaft lengths on the NV231.

The AX15 usually takes the 23 spline short input shaft style.

23 spline AW4s take a medium length input shaft.
