Steel wool only works if you know where they are getting in. I've done the bucket too. Or, if you are more humane, a live trap with dates as bait works very well.

I had a litter of either chipmunks or squirrels in my basement this spring. I knew where the nest was so I set several rat sized glue traps up and within a few hours caught 6 of them. I am now using those ultra sonic deterrent things in the outlets by where I caught them with fresh glue traps. Haven't caught one since plugging them in and the weird noises at night stopped. I have a live trap set up in that room now with some peanut buttered bread in case mom and pop come back, so far nothing has touched it in 2 months since I put it out.

Once you eliminate them try the ultrasonic things, seem to work for me.

d-con pellets in a baggie, crush into powder

mix powder in peanut butter and place around suspect area and or in traps.

critters will eat and die (but you won't know where) as the d-con attacks the blood and it is not especially fast acting.

if you suspect they are entering via floor drain, fill it with water. sometimes, over the years the drain will evaporate dry. the water in the trap is supposed to prevent gases and critters from entering via back flow.

We had this issue and regular old mouse poison took care of them. I never could find where they were getting in.
