Always camped up there before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. On several occasions it would be warm enough and the wind would change, the stable flies would show up out of no where. They don't seem to care if you have deet on or not, the winds would change again and they would be gone. I think during week days you can call union bay ranger station and get a update.

We have anywhere from 8-12 days to go where ever we want. So I am looking for other places to go also. I am not spending 12 days in a tent up there.

Mosquito's have been bad up here this year. Lake Superior is still real cold, ice just finally melted. There is tons of camping available on the West end of the UP lots of cheap hotels that are clean if you get sick of the tent. Black River area has lots of nice hiking/ camping.

Well we arrived Saturday aboutt 7:30pm at Presque isle campground. As soon as we stepped out of the vehicle the black flies hit. They swarmed us and were biting everywhere...we covered ourselves with a can of cutters backwoods .......it had no effect . It was like a candy coating for them.
My wife and son were getting attacked relentlessly. .. we were already covered in cutters but we had no chouce but to break out the 75% deet spray. Desperate for relief from the black fly onslaught i coverd us with it and got out to finish the tent so my wife and son could hide inside. Ignoring the swarm i got the tent up and they ran in and zipped the tent shut. They were setting up the beds etc between trying to kill the many flies that chased them in. Meanwhile i worked outside tring to unload the vehicle and finish setting up.
As i was working a few people stopped and said they had enough. They told us that many people had already given up and left soon after arriving. They had set up earlier and were told that the blackflies went away at night. These guys said they were going to stick it out until dark. If the flies left so they could at keast get out of their vehicle they might stay.
So i am coverd in deet, black flies and sweat as i struggle to set up on my own. The biting is keeping my mind off the searing pain coming from my lower back . My son is in tears from biting and my wife is sick from the deet overdose. But the tent is up and it is getting dark....if the black flies go away i could finish setting up,start a fire and we might be ok.....but as the black flies started to leave the mosquito swarmed in by the millions. I was covered in them in seconds. I had enough by nowso i covered my self in a can of 98% deet put my wife and son in the vehicle and coverd in mosquito i began taking down the tent. Even in the vehicle they were attacked. I just tore down everything as fast as possible stuffing everything. Into the vehicle. As us and a few other campers were leaving a storm rolled in.
Now it is 11pm we are all covered in deet, sweat and bites. So i drove all the way to baraga looking for a place to sleep and eat. We found a hotel and checked in about 1am. We decided to stay here and spent today going to waterfalls etc. We had a great picnic/ cookout in l`annse waterfront park.we are going fishing monday and habe a list of places to go.
I spent four years in the Marine Corps and spent many days in jungles, rain forrest and deep woods. I have been to the UP many times. Never have i been swarmmed like that. Every repellent we tried had zero effect..

Don't let it ruin camping for you, you had a bad time with bugs. Lots of awesome places to see car camping with a boat in tow.

We are on the other side of the park in the union bay camp ground. The flys are not as bad over here. We have been here since Friday and are staying till Sunday the 6th. That being said we have our 5th wheel and a screen tent.

We have done some hiking to the falls and lake of the clouds. Also have done some day trips to other places around the area. All our hiking has been done with long pants long sleeve tshirts and head nets. If the flys can't get to your skin they have not been biting.

We have been all over from copper harbor back to lake of the clouds . We went to a bunch of waterfalls, some lighthouses, the highest point in michigan, rode our bikes up in copper harbor ( until my youngest crashed...he is fine just the usual scrapes.) we even went fishing a few times. Today is the 4th and the fireworks will be Right behind our hotel. As far as the flies and squitos the first night was terrible . Most of the time they have not been real bad but a few times as we were hiking back to some waterfalls the mosquitoes would just cover us no matter how much or brand of repellant we used. I even tried some stuff that was 98% deet ....the stuff probably will knock 3 years off my life ....the worst part is it just pissed off the mosquitoes and they attacked us.

If your staying in Baraga, head up to Chassell a couple hrs before dark and fish off the dock. Its a huge dock. The dock is in the shape of an L, go all the way to the end and fish by the pylon's. Use crawlers but break them in pieces, if ya use worms they'll clean ya out. Stay till dark and ya can catch crappie, bass, blues and perch. Some times big crappie or big perch. If no luck, set the kids up w part of a crawler and jig off the same end of the dock just a worm, hook and small sinker. Let go to the bottom and crank up a couple times, you'll slay the little perch, kids love it. The bugs usually aren't bad there. You can also take 41 to 141/28 turn right, go to Covington turn left on 141 and go a few miles down and you'll see a huge swamp on your left. Go just before dark and you will have a really good chance to see moose in that swamp. You could also go check out Silver Mountian, its west on M 38. There is a little bar in Rockland called Henry's, Friday is their fish fry and buffet, walleye, salmon, perch, shrimp plus tons of other food. Great food for the whole family and only like $12 or $13 for all you can eat. If you can get there before 6 or you'll be waiting in line. Good luck and enjoy.

I'm glad its working out for your trip!

When that happened to us on our hiking trip, we had planned on skirting the whole shore of Superior, but because of the flies, we cut off about 4 days from the trip and heading inland at the first trail we found.

Sturgeon River Gorge is a cool sight to see.

Thanks guys....we just got home tonight about 11 pm we had a blast overall. I had picked up a flyer from the tourist place in L'anse and we started going down the list of attractions. We had a great time going to so many cool places. We did go fishing a few times...I did what a lot of people do when fishing in a new place. I stopped at the local bait shop and asked where to go. The first guy went ummm?.. I mean I ask where would be a decent place to take my son to catch a few fish? No real answer .. So decided to go do some other stuff. The next day we stopped at the bait shop again. Luckily a different guy was working so I asked him the same question. He tells me the perfect place is Parent lake. He says you will catch so many perch you will get sick of catching them. Excited that my 8 yr old will most likely catch a fish or two we headed out. Well after fishing for two hours with out so much as a nibble we left. I stopped at the tourist info building again to pick up some info on Mt Arvon. I mention to the lady working about our disappointing morning fishing. She says "Parent lake? Who would send you there? That lake was low last fall and the winter freeze killed most of the fish and nobody has caught anything since" . Wow nice info from the only bait shop in L'anse.
But on the cool side we had some great two track adventures thanks to my garmin lol. We had loaded in the coordinates that were in the flyer for Mount Arvon . The flyer told of different things like waterfalls to see on the way up to the top. Well we didn't see any of those things but we did go down a few dead end trails, a trail that crossed a moving stream ( it was not very deep and it was a stone bed , I have not done a lot of off road stuff and am not up on all the rules etc but I was thinking that I had read on GL that crossing is a no no so not wanting to be another idiot giving the off road guys a bad rap I decided to go ahead and back up all the way to the other trail.) I did not see any no trespassing signs or anything so I just made sure I stayed on the trail and enjoyed the adventure.

Glad ya had a good time. That's a bummer about the fishing, the guy who owns that shop is a fishing & huntn fool. Sounds like he had his holiday help there and they didn't know a damn thing. I'll let him know about it. Mt Arvon area is super cool to explore, the majority of that area is CFR land, so its free game. You can go from Big Eric's bridge all the way to Big Bay through the woods. That trail that crosses the river just makes a short loop in the woods and brings ya right back to that same crossing, so ya didn't miss much, lol.
