Default Shifter recommendations for TJ with 4L60e

Worth seeking out a stock auto TJ shifter and modifying to work or should I just buy a winters and call it a day? I don't know how I'd mount the winters without looking like an afterthought. I have a lokar in my chevette and I don't want to use one offroad. Mega shifter shit is out the door along with ratchet garbage so don't even suggest it

I alway like my GTP and bonneville shifters and they have a performance shift button built right in but the junkyards are very sparse up here so I'd have as much into gas and time as buying a winters and going with a junkyard setup. What say you GL4x4? My main concern is being able to comfortably shift while stupid off camber trying to stay in my seat.

It'll be going here somewhere:

Why no lokar? It would be the easiest to package I would guess. Maybe a bit harder to quickly hit 1st to reverse, but likely no different than a factory shifter.

Did they ever put an OD manual in the TJ to be able to hit all the gears? Or is the XJ modular enough to use in the TJ setup?

Would you cut the gates on the Winters? I like our Winters shifter for racing, but it drives me bonkers when trail riding. The gates are good for no look shifts when racing, but listening to clank-clank-clank while moving from 1st to reverse gets old when playing.

Get better seats and belts.

Cut a hole in the floor and do it manually.

Lokar would package nicer but knowing what gear I'm in brings the suck in my chevette. My plan is to program the "performance shift" function to hold whatever gear I'm in when I engage it (still have to figure out if it'll force shift or not) so I won't be moving gears around much(staying in "D" 90% of the time). Winters has a rock gate for the 4l60e so I don't have to cut anything if I order the right gate.

That's the thing, if I actually stayed planted in my seat there's no way I'd reach the shifter if I mount it in the stock location. Advice appreciated.

I didn't think it would end up being very robust. Just have to figure out how to mount a winters/lokar without reinventing the wheel.

Get taller, or lankier?

Some orangutan arms would suffice.

I could try to get a gtp one down here in skeetown and ship it up to you?

I use the light truck mega shifter on my 4L60E in my street truck, I like its height. This is not a suggestion, rather a statement of what I use.

Something like this sticking up through the console I'd imagine.

The bonneville/gtp/regal shifters are nice because the performance shift button is right on the side of the shifter so to hold the gear you're in, just tap the button. Hit it again when you want to shift. I'm not sure the throw in the gates will match up though and I'm not in the mood to reinvent the wheel through a cam at the trans to get it to work either Call me lazy but I just want it to work.

Says the man who ordered the wrong tone ring for his VSS?

If you want it to work, but something that works, and make it fit.

What I did was ran a newer style counsel and bent up a little metal for the shifter area and it also worked great I just ran the cable thru the grommet for the ebrake cable so it was nice and clean

If you want to keep manual shift mode, perhaps you could get a TJ steering wheel with cruise control (might need to change out the clockspring) and figure out how to wire the cruise control buttons to shift.

It would keep both hands on the wheel...most of the time. :D

That would imply that there was another option.........it was "the" tone ring that I ordered.

As far as I know you can't do that without an aftermarket controller.......and I've read alot about it because I wanted to do it in the chevette but with exception of the 6LXX, it's not possible yet.

That's a good idea, I have the area where the Ebrake goes through completely open so that would work well 00

hint the original grommet fits perfect around the winters shifter cable and also I got the counsel that has the flat spots on ether side witch is the same price as the stock one.

Don't the winters or art Carr shifters have an option with a trans brake button? Then you could have your fancy button in a convenient location.

I don't dabble into the Jeep side of things but I vote Art Carr as well. My sidewinder has a very crisp positive feel and I can still grab gears while hitting moguls and such in my ranger rather easily

On a side not I wasn't aware of winters having that option unless you modified it to work to your liking?

Their website is awful but that's an option!
