Default Towing Camper with Wrangler (LJ)

I have been thinking about picking up a smallish camper to pull behind our LJ on a trip out west in a few weeks. I know the tow rating for the LJ is 3500 lbs. I would like something significantly less than that.

I'm kicking myself because I missed out on a crazy deal for a tear drop near Ann Arbor this week.

What I'm looking for is something to sleep in at the end of a day of driving. Pull over somewhere, go to bed, get up the next day and keep going. Boom, saved 100$ on a Holiday Inn Express.

Honestly, the tear drop would be perfect, but they are few and far between and big $$ when you find them.

Another option is a pop-up. They are a little heavier, but probably just as aerodynamic. The problem with these is they have to be set up. I would prefer the security of a hard sided trailer if we chose to sleep at a truck stop or something. Plus I would rather not deal with the whole set up of the trailer at 11pm.

Another option is an older vintage hard sided travel trailer. It's hard to find them small though and sometimes HEAVY.

Any advice from Wrangler owners towing campers?

I just bought this and have only towed it once so far. I was surprized how well the Jeep towed it. I how ever am planning on regearing the axles in the near future. The max weight is 3500lbs. We were using a pop-up before but it got to be a pain in the ass setting up and tearing down in the rain. Now we just park it level it and push the button for the slide and we are done.

How much does the trailer weigh? How does it affect MPG on trips?

Loaded it is about 3500lbs. My mileage dropped from 12.5 to 8.5. I think the gearing will help this as I was towing with OD off. I think with the gearing I should be able to keep OD on and boost my mileage a couple of miles.

Sucks pulling with a LJ being a automatic w/overdrive. Even without pulling a trailer the trans would step out of overdrive at 65 mph. That was with 33"s and 4:56 gears. imo the kick down is to touchie.

Please make it "something" and not a truck stop. There is a shortage of truck parking, even without others taking up these limited spots. Thanks in advanced from a driver who has ran into this problem many times.

Small aluminum enclosed snowmobile trailer. Mine is totally decked out inside for camping. I can still haul 2 sleds or bikes or quads. Light, never rust, not crazy expensive. Check out becks trailer sales in st johns. mine is Bigger than u need, it was 3600. My lj tows it fine even loaded well past lj ratings.

4.56 aint enough gear for 33s with an auto. U need 4.88 to 5.13 minimum, and never tow in od.
we just gotta learn to go slower when towing. 65 might be a little fast to tow much with an lj.

my lj rubicon is gonna be 5.89 when it gets geared.
Say bye bye to the air lockers.

They suckage balls with 33's and 373's. I haven't tried switching off the OD on the highway is third too low for highway speed ?

3.73 with 33s and the od switched off , is very close rpm wise to stock tires overdive on.
shut it off and drive it. It will be a dog from the stop light. But highway rpm will be at least bearable. Towing like that will be near impossible.

my rubicon with 30s and 4.10 is a dog really. I want to trade it for a 6spd bad!

od in the 4spd auto is .69. Od in the 6spd man is .84. Its a big difference.
it also takes more power to drive the auto than a manual.

Look for a 1980's or 1990's fiberglass trailer or "egg". Light weight but are kind of elusive to locate. Makers names like Burro, Uhaul, Casita, and Scamp.

If you are interested in a fixer upper / never completely finished tear drop id make you a deal. I did a build thread on here a few years back.

Take it from someone who is ALLOWED to use those spots just as much as the next guy. I could care less if there is a shortage of spots, if I need it, I'm going to use it. Thanks in advance from fellow driver who doesn't believe one is better than the other
