Default Buying a repaired salvage title vehicle

What are the things to watch out for when buying a salvage title vehicle? I've owned one before, but it was a 2k$ beater truck. My wife is really interested in a Wrangler Unlimited that has been salvaged and repaired.

What is a reasonable discount for a salvaged vehicle when compared to clean retail? I've heard from 5% to 50%.

Has anyone had a problem getting full coverage insurance for one?

Any little quirks about them that you don't think about at the time of purchase? We understand the resale value will suck, but anything else?

Just for fun, here's a pic of the Jeep. (I already told her the chrome grill= the ugly).

According to my wife, clean retail is 16k in very good condition. It's a 2006 w/ 67k miles. What would you pay?

What is the reason for the pink title?

Theft recovery vs a accident total out are two pretty different things. Each effect value differently IMO.

Cheaper, lower quality, refinishing materials won't last as long as factory paint

Should be priced about $12,500 in my opinion based on the value you posted.

But check everything on it, especially the reason for the rebuilt title.

Not over $12k, but I would seriously look @SS 's unlimited if I was in the market. That is, unless you don't want a stick.

I have had great luck with them. no idea what cars hes flipping now since saturns are gone. bought the last one 4 years ago and it now has 118k and running just fine and dandy.

I bought a 2006 wrangler lj/salvage from daveys jeeps, paid $9,000. for it. It only had, maybe 8500. miles on it. Front passenger hit. Replaced the front axle, pulled the passenger fender, hammered it flat/bolt back on, paid the $100. inspection and had it retitled. Later added lockers front and rear. I hardly ever took it off road and sold it with less than 25,000. miles(took 5 months to sell) for $10,000.
With the work I put into it it was a draw as to trying to recover what I spent on it. A rebuilt title is "harder to sell." Sold it 3 years ago. I say the 2006 is prob worth $9, or $10,000. (todays prices are up) Take it to a frame shop( or your favorite mechanic) and have it checked out if your spending more $$$. IMO
Just to say that when the vehicle gets inspected for a rebuilt title, they are not looking for a bent frame they are more interested in auto theft, mismatching numbers, etc.
Crawl underneath and look for broken casting on the engne block(broken bolts ) crooked engine mounts(frame could be twisted) bent upper or lower control arms, Leaking fluids? look for cracks on the trans and case, Bent or broken welds on the axle control arm brackets. I'd buy it if the price is right, just sayn. Good luck on the LJ.
If the frame is bent its prob worth getting it straightened. A shop over here on Opdyke/ Auburn Hills straightened a wrangler/frame for me for $400. It just depends on how out of wack the frame is.

With State Farm at least, they just want to take a look at the vehicle and make sure it's repaired properly for full coverage.

What to look at depends entirely on why it got the salvage title. I'd give it a VERY thorough inspection, looking for frame damage or repairs, wrinkles or repairs anywhere on or under the body, parts that aren't stock, wiring splices, anything that appears to have ever been unbolted, paint quality, etc, etc. Repaired salvage vehicles are a good way to save money if you plan to own the vehicle for a long time or drive it into the ground. If you're likely to sell it before long then the money you save will just get passed along to the next buyer. I don't see a problem with them as long as you're smart, logical, and cautious about what to look for. If something seems fishy or doesn't add up, walk away.

I never owned one, and I guess I wouldn't be scared to buy one if it was done right

My buddies uncle told me they are all pieces of shit, and rigged together, also most insurance companies won't even give you plpd, the vehicle is usually no longer safe.

hehe i have no experience but just wanted to be a part of this thread.

They salvaged it for that? Was there damage to the axle/control arms?

Looks like the cowl might have a wrinkle... I'm surprised that was a total.

Wow looks good. As said before. If you plan on keeping it for good buy it. If its just to get you by a couple years I wouldn't bother with it. Check it over. Drive it, have someone follow you to make sure it doesn't dog track or anything. Then buy it and love it

did you pull a car fax too? that pic doesn't appear to have enough damage to be a salvage

That's what I was thinking.

There had to be some sort of frame damage or something. The damage shown in the pic is just fender bender grade stuff.
