Sounds like The Ragin Cajun has went downhill in the past couple years.
Honestly, I haven't been there in 8 or so years but it was a must stop for me when I did travel for work. Pappadeaux is a great one and I have been to the one in Houston on the West side Galleria area as well. they have a good brunch (did have) on Sundays and awesome Alexander sauce for their fish.

Also, the House of Pies on Westheimer was a great breakfast spot as well.

Also, Texas Land and Cattle used to have a great house smoked Sirloin that was worth stopping in for. There is one on the Katy Freeway.

If you drive from Dallas to Austin do not stop at the roadside picnic area, pulled in there to look at a map and couldn't leave fast enough.

If you are in Austin On a Wednesday, I recommend checking out James Mcmurtry at Club Continental he puts on an excellent show. Also the Saltlick BBQ just outside of Austin in Driftwood will not disappoint.

That's about it. It's like breathing water when you walk outside. If there is hell on earth, Houston would be it.

I've never been to the Ragin Cajun, but I would highly recommend Pappadeaux. If there was one restaurant I would hit while in that area it would be Pappadeaux.

For steak I liked Salt Grass over Texas Land & Cattle, but both are good.

Depending on where you are in Dallas, we used to hit a place called Mariano’s in Arlington. They did table side guacomole that was awesome. Not good enough to go out of your way for, but better than a lot in that area.

And be sure to hit a Whataburger at least once..

I'm in Houston this week and happened to eat at Pappadeaux before seeing this thread. I can confirm that it is worth the trip. I can also confirm that it is humid, the traffic sucks, and I want to go home. Enjoy.

So pretty much the same as when I lived there 30+ years ago.
