Default how far do you commute?

we are starting to look at houses/property... Everything we like that is within budget is about 40 miles one way...

I am being picky and want over 5 acres, and a descent house.

Currently I am driving 12 miles (back roads) or 16 miles highway in my pickup. Is 40ish miles one way within reason? get a 4cyl thats descent on gas and fun to drive?

OR, settle for less?

I think it's more about time rather than distance. 14 miles takes me 40 minutes where I live and maybe 40 miles by you may take 40 minutes.

40 miles is a long drive in a bad winter storm to get home. Its also going to get old driving that far.

I drive .9 miles one way currently.

I was commuting 60 miles one way.

I am moving to where it is about 25-30 miles one way.

40 miles is reasonable IMO, I wanted to shoot for 40 minute drive or less to work. as far as the car is concerned, that is up to you. you will eventually pay for the cost of the car in fuel savings, but it takes a while. You won't be putting as many miles on the truck that way, either. YMMV.

I'm 4 miles from work.

But I prefer to be within walking distance just in case.

22 miles one way, takes around 25 mins with normal traffic. I like the drive, gives me some time to myself and some wind down time on the way home.

45 miles one way. 50-55 minutes. Been doing it for 20 years now. Winters can bring the suck.

x2. the 20-40 minute window seems to be best. I noticed when I was doing the 1 hour each way, I would wind down, then get frustrated because of the additional time wasted... or the idiots on the road. I do miss my little beater saturn though. That was fun.

I used to drive the shittiest 55 miles you could imagine. Fenton to southfield, most of it in bumper to bumper traffic at 25mph on 96/696. It sucked ass.

I'd gladly drive 55 miles from fenton out to lansing in trade. I'd have wide open roads 99% of the time.

Like Tjjeep said, it's about time for me, not miles.

I am now lucky enough to work from home.

Mines about an hour each way (White Lake to Warren/Northville).

Wish it was closer but I like where I live.

I can't stand long commutes. I'm in a situation now where my office is 45-60 minutes away, and I'm also driving a lot between customer sites or wherever else. I've found I need to keep commutes under 30 minutes one way (15-20 is perfect) to keep myself sane.

Google search long commutes and stress.

That helps also.....I plow snow in the winter so I am up before most the retards and normally head in before 6am when I am not plowing so traffic is not bad. 1200 watts of music helps on the way home

I used to drive 45 minutes one way. Now I drive 7 minutes. Wouldnt change it for anything. Time with my family is more important to me than anything else. I moved from brighton to romulus just so I would be closer to work and have more time with my family.
It depends on you. What do you value more time with your family or time driving to and from work?

I drive about 12 miles each way (Birmingham to Pontiac/Waterford). It's really not that bad of a commute since I'm sort of going against the heaviest traffic but if I somebody offered me a job in Birmingham that I could walk or ride my bicycle to, I'd take it, even if it was a bit of a pay cut.

Growing up, my dad drove about 35 miles each way from Casco Township down to Detroit. He did that for a few decades. I don't know how he didn't go crazy!

I've had the same 4 mile commute for about 10 years now. I had a 30 mile commute for a short while when we lived in Chicago, and it would take me 2 to 2.5 hours in the morning, and 1.5 to 2 hours in the evening. At some point, I started staying until 5:30pm and still got home at the same time; immediately got permission for 30 mins of OT everyday.

FWIW, As horrible as that Chicago commute might sound, rush hour is FAR worse here in Grand Rapids. Here, traffic is moving just fast enough for people to do stupid things and slow enough that the selfish jerks get impatient make their BS moves. Then sprinkle in just enough people that don't know how to drive when there are 3 lanes.

In general, I'd prefer to keep my commute under 40 minutes, so 40 miles is possible depending on the area.

I would have back roads and going up and down 52 to 94. not bad, but some stopping and going. google says 45-50 minutes. depending on the house/land that we are looking at.

most I have done is 32. BUT that was from NW san antonio to SE san antonio. took almost 1.5 hours bumper to bumper. This would be all country driving. I work in pittsfield. So wouldnt even get into ann arbor. chelsea or saline would be my worst traffic.

I think most important is get the house you want. Get a cheap 4 cylinder car (my grandpa had a festiva he just drove to work) and stock up on books on tape lol

12 miles from Waterford to Auburn Hills. About a 20-25 minute commute in the morning. I'm okay with it.
