Default power trax failure

Question, I had a wj that came into the shop with a rear axle failure. The cross shaft ripped itself out of the carrier. It was an open carrier with a power trax in it. The power trax turns out to be for a c clip style d35 not the non c clip style its installed it. Does anyone know the difference in the power trax? And besides crosspin failure what normally causes this. (Weak carrier? Crosspin slop?)

A wj should have a c-clip d35
The non c-clip axles were pre 89 I believe

Wrong. The WJ has a bolt-in Dana 35 axle.

The only difference is the cut-out for the the c-clip, provided it's for a 1993.5 and later differential.

The Dana 35 carrier is notorious for breaking and spitting out spider gears. It was probably caused by the installation of the powertrax but being for a c-clip axle probably has nothing to do with it.
