Default Excursion Electronics Gone Wonky!!!!

Kind of a long story here, but bear with me.

Last night we had this huge storm with lots of wind, rain, and tree damage. I went out after the storm to start my 2000 7.3 Diesel Excursion. As I approached the truck, I could hear the door alarm binging. Getting in, the theft light was blinking rapidly. Went to start and it will only crank but not fire. I also noticed my door unlock fob for the key chain would not work, but my door code did (I always lock doors as I carry tools and such for work) There is no aftermarket alarm.

Looking online I found lots of talk about the PATS system and how to reset the key in the ignition. I went through the reset procedure several times with no luck. Disconnected the batteries for several minutes, hooked back up, and same thing. Door alarm still binging. So I unhooked the batteries and let it sit for the night.

This morning I hooked the batteries back up and it started right away. Door locks were working again. Went to drive it down the road. It ran and drove fine, but my speedometer was bouncing between about 10 and 30 mph. Plus I discovered my radio would not work in anything besides park and neutral, and the radio would not turn off with the ignition, even after opening doors. I have to manually shut it off.

Drove the truck around today turning it on and off several times. Speedometer operated normal for awhile, but starting being wonky again. Radio is still weird. Went to go restart it a bit ago, and once again it is doing what it did last night, theft light blinking rapid, cranking but not starting.

I did look under the dash for the famous "leaky windshield" problem the superdutys have. The fuse panel and GEM module are dry and look fine. No moisture anywhere. All fuses appear good.

Everything online I read points to PATS or GEM problems, however my conditions do not meet the "normal" problems with either. Supposedly if PATS is out, windows will not work and they do. Supposedly with GEM problems the same. Same goes for interior lights, with GEM they should supposedly not work but they do.

HELLLLLLLPPPPPP!!!!

Pull the fuse block and look inside. Just because you can't "see it" looking from underneath doesn't mean it isn't there.

I have also seen alternators play funky games with the electronics on these trucks. They'll still charge fine.

Sounds like water in the gem.....pull the two connectors off the back of the fuse block and see if there is water/mositure in them.

Pulled GEM today and it was in good shape, no corrosion. Put back in and it runs, but radio and door locks funky still.

My two symptoms now are directly related to the PATS system. Any idea how to test/check that before condemning the GEM?

I dunno what Pats is.

It started with the door locks, fuel guage, then the radio, then the dome lights and license plate lights, somewhere along the way the 4x4 knob stopped working consistently, rear axle speed sensor, then the speedo and the under the dash beeping.

Actually, Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) is the key transponder system and has nothing to do with the door locks or radio.

Locks, radio and a ton of other stuff is run by the GEM. Best case would be to get a scanner on it to see what is going on. Sounds like a GEM issue but I would want to check powers, grounds and inputs first before condemning the GEM.

Update:

The day after I pulled the GEM and dielectric greased it everything started working correctly again.

So fingers crossed!
