According to building code 32-6527 you can not legally use that type of pole as a permanent support. Generally they are pulled at the time of inspection but once in a while they are forgotten about. It is fine to remove at any time.

I'm pretty sure every house since the 80's uses those as support in the basement. I could be wrong, but that would mean every house I lived in as a child wouldn't have passed inspection...

What size beam is it? Looks pretty small and a long span.

There are a few different ways you could try to beef up the existing beam, but you're probably stuck with it.

I vote remove it anyway.

I did the same thing and use it to pull the 360 out of my waggy.

I don't think that pole is holding the beam up, I think it's keeping the floor down.

Judging from the consensus, I think i'll just yank it out with the 4-wheeler, no point it bothering with waiting to see if it bends....it looks strong enough to hold just fine.

I should even be able to bolt up a winch so I don't have to use a vehicle jack anymore

Anyone available to help? I want to make sure it's done right

A swift karate chop should get rid of that pole right quick.
