There's a reason your new vehicle comes with one. In this case, GM's system defaults to SD when it throws a maf code so all the people worried about maf failures should be focused on making their tuner do a complete SD tune before re-enabling the maf sensor and tuning maf only as well. Or go ahead and throw out the more accurate way of feeding your engine information and hope the weather, temperature and elevation that you actually tuned at don't change. This is why I don't comment on this shit anymore, typical "I used tractor links and they didn't break" internet style discussions.....

Good piece of information from the link JJ
"Manufacturers claim that a simple but extremely reliable test to ensure correct functionality is to tap the unit with the back of a screwdriver while the car is running, and if this causes any changes in the output frequency then the unit should be discarded and an OEM replacement installed."

Disclaimer: I'm not master tunerhead guy that does this for a living. I'm not a mechanic that troubleshoots this stuff for a living either. I only know what I've tuned and dealt with and try to be as open as I can. These topics stay black magic because the people that know it don't talk about it or get to the point I'm at where joe blow with a 79 camaro and a plow is constantly throwing bullshit in the wind to see where it sticks. Run your shit however you want, mine will have a maf sensor.

We have been happy with the MAF. We run a basic Frost mail order tune that turned off theft and some codes (evap, rear o2s, standard stuff) and bumped it to run on premium.

We run the van air box that has the MAF attached to it, and that has been a nice setup. In previous builds and watching other guys setups, they have had a lot of dirt and water getting into their engines, even with mounting them in-cab and other games like pre-filters. With our stock air box and stock paper filter our intake tube is perfectly clean. Doesn't get any more KISS than that.

We will grab a new connector to make sure it isn't backing off due to the broken retainer. Plus I'll check the IAC has the right throw per the service manual.

I think I might take it to the neighbors and see if he can put it on his smoke machine and look for intake leaks with that. We shot carb cleaner all over the intake last night and no change in revs, but maybe smoke will show us something.

Pulled some history on the vin... Purchased Summer 2005. Last update was Spring 2009 at just over 200,000 miles for a warranty recall. We bought the motor in fall 2011.

I like that airbox. I think everybody is learning that airboxes are the way to go if you have room for them.

After my first trip to Moab, I found my entire throttle body, MAF, and intake full of orange dust from using just a K&N cone filter. Needless to say, I don't run that anymore. The AEM dryflow filter seems to do a much better job.

Another fan of your airbox. I am running a cone filter with outerwear on it, but it is hard to make it not suck hot air.

its called a power Core. i will look for the pic of the pile of dirt, its quite amazing. The car kicks up a fair amount of dirt haha

the box is mounted right behind the motor. the tuner said its the cleanest air flow past a maf he has seen in a long time while tuning.

Nearly half way through the intake gasket swap. Had to come in for dinner. Looks like this isn't the first set of gaskets since it's already running the same fel pro gaskets we are putting on.

We installed the original intake with new seals and it still had the problem. We tried chasing down the leak again but no luck. Jesse had brought over a spare intake just in case, but it was old with the large sensor port just behind the throttle body. Since we were down on options we made a block off plate and transferred our sensors and fuel rails to the spare intake. Fired it up and everything is good again.

Somewhere along the line, we must have put a slight crack in the original intake. We could not find it with a light test, but bottom line is it seems the issue has been solved with the new to us intake. Hopefully I will have a few minutes before work tomorrow to start it up and make sure it is solved after a few hour cold soak.

Now we can move on to prep'ing the car.

Was looking for a picture in this thread and found this quote. This statement was correct. Jesse replaced the pivot with a brass bushing.

New radiator came in today. Obviously from the pics we went with CBR. I had looked around and they had a stock setup that was 24x19 with 2 1" cores and a built in shroud for a 16" Spal fan. I called to ask a few questions and check on availability and ended up ordering the radiator. They confirmed it had the recommended Spal fan for offroad (no surprise) and we talked about what we were doing. He said they would build to order, so I had them make it with 1.25" upper and 1.5" lower so we didn't need to step down the hose size to the Gen3/4 V8 like on most universals. They also added the steam port so we can run it direct to the radiator.

The final thing and what I really like was the fan support. I have only noticed this on CBR radiators, and I hope it helps stabilize the fan while we beat the tar out of the unit. Fit and finish is beautiful, and it's built like a tank. Shipping packaging was also very good. UPS had managed to punch a hole in the box, but with the shipping paper they use the radiator is in great shape.

Did the nail polish come with it, or was it optional?

Is there a new side of John that makes me want to reconsider rooming with him next year?
