Default dana 35 carrier swap

Okay i broke my carrier in my dana 35 bought a trak lok for it had 4.10's on the stock carrier the trak lok i bought has 3.55 gear which is the 39 tooth ring gear the stock ring gear i had in my jeep was a 37 ring gear which means my jeep had 4.10 gears but the guy that put it together told me the ring gear off my stock carrier would not fit. Was he drunk putting it together or is he correct the trak lok carrier came out of a cherokee. So now he put the 39 tooth ring with the 9 tooth carrier making me have 4.33 gears and i looked at him dumb when it was back together because i have never heard of 4.33 gears in a dana 35. Please give me some feedback

I think you both may have been drunk. Ratios are easy, divide the ring gear tooth count by the pinion tooth count for your ratio. You cannot mix a ring and a pinion from different ratios and get a good setup pattern. There is a split for the carrier but I'm not sure where it's at so he may have been correct about not being able to use the 3.55 carrier for your 4.10 gears. Having your gears set up is a job best left to someone who's not drunk, unless you like paying for the job twice.

Dana 35 carrier split is 3.31 and down/3.54 and up. so that is the correct carrier. You must be doing something else rong.

don't listen to scott, he's drunk too

So yes, your 410 gears will work on that trac lok that had 355 gears on it. And don't go by the ring gear tooth count only - ring gear teeth divided by pinion gear teeth is the way to come up with the ratio. And like tab said - never mix and match ring gears and pinion gears...think of them as a matched set.

That's why I didn't commit! I thought it was at 4.10 or maybe 3.55. I too would have been wrong.

Yes i understand that but 39/ 9 is 4.333 and 37/9 is 4.10 how much to set the backlash on the axle? And it was a good friend of mine his step dad he did it i know thats how you get the ratio but i was just saying as a reference. the reason i didnt put it back together.

They never made a 4.33 gear ratio for the M35. 39/11 = 3.55 though...

It should never be an either or situation. ALWAYS a matched set. One ring gear, one pinion gear, no exceptions. That's probably why you have so much slop, and no adjustment in the world is going to get a mismatched set to set up correctly. You'll need a new set or at least the one of what're part your missing to match the other.

really? why are you bumping this? Your gears were done wrong. You can't even miss match gears of the same ratio. They are lapped together and are to be keeper as a set. either swap the pinion from the carrier you bought and have 3.55 or swap the ring from your stock and have 4.10. There is no other way. I'm surprised you haven't destroyed the rear end yet. Chances are you messed up the ring and pinion now if you have been driving it around and need a while new set of gears. Good luck and don't let the same guy install them.
