Default Anyone here familiar with the St. Paul, MN area?

It looks like I will be heading to work at the Flint Hills refinery near St Paul MN for a few months. I have never been to Minnesota before and don't have any idea which areas to stay away from when looking for a place to stay. The refinery looks to be south-east of the city and I would prefer to stay within 20 miles of the plant.
I know I don't what to pay a premium for a really nice area, but would like somewhere with a lower crime rate than Detroit.

Stay away from Walmarts (given), target is based in the twin cities. I used to live in Lakeville MN and commuted to Bloomington MN.

As a general rule stay away from the Mall of America area if you can. Along American Bvld. is a shady area. I used to work off of 82nd and 35W. I can't tell you how many drug deals I saw go down between there and MoA.

FWIW I Googled Flint Hills, its not a bad area. I don't remember it being bad when I was out there. The north side of the cities are usually where the feral humans live. I still lived south of where you are working.

The split in 35 into East and West and Highway 13 is a high congestion area. I remember around 630a to 730a that was a parking lot. At least it will feel like home for ya.

I am up there quite often, usually at least 5 weeks per year. I usually stay in Woodbury MN. That I believe is close to there. The Holiday Inn Express there is nice, and lots of good food nearby. It usually runs about $120/night. The Lakes Steakhouse is a good place to eat as well and is just around the corner.

There is a Cabela's in Rodgers, and they have ammo in stock if you need any.

Edit: Plan extra time for travel, Minneapolis has some of the worst rush hour traffic I have ever seen. I'm guessing you won't be staying in a hotel though.

I've only been out there twice (and once was about 20 years ago) for a few days each. I cannot recall particular areas that are good or bad but will say that if you enjoy running or bicycling, Minneapolis has one of the best systems of urban trails I have ever seen.

Thanks all. I'm looking at staying in an extended stay type motel unless I can find a cheap month-to-month apartment. Work does not pay any of my expenses so I want something on the cheap side. So far I have been thinking about the extended-stay's in Woodbury, Eagan, and Burnsville.

Jim will be staying home.
