good luck fellas. Its a long road. Try to take deep breaths those first 20 minutes and find a groove. put a block behind the skinny pedal until the first pit.

First time there, finish. Experience crossing the finish line.

I like what Mike did. He raced to finish the first couple years, proved to himself he could. Then he went to win. Both times he DNF'd, he was doing well.

Quick write-up I put on the DNF thread on pirate:

On lap one near mile 47 we noticed engine temps started to rise after holding steady for the first 40 miles at 210. Pulled off after entering camel mode and found radiator fan was not running. Spent a few minutes trouble shooting and found the fan was dead. Tried cooling it off and a number of other things with no luck.

Limped a few miles until it would overheat and put is in camel mode and pull most of the power. On the third stop we had the idea to steal the trans cooling fan and put it on the radiator. This allowed us to limp back in and swap in a fan. Took off for lap 2 after winner had already came in. We ran into a lot of the leftover carnage in the rocks and could not get done in time.

We made it to Mile 90 heading towards the Johnsons when the course workers let us know that official race support was done, and that we would be marked DNF whether we made it in or not. We made the decision to head to camp since the people that would help us get back if we had a big issue were preparing for the Friday race, and we did not want to cause them issues.

Sad part is that other than the cooling fan, we had no other issues with the car. It just took too much time to recover from. The car drove off the trailer and back into the garage.

Jess is full of air. Why didn't you strap him to the grill and tell him to keep talking?

As for the fan, we have been using the Grand Cherokee fans for years. They are 19" and move plenty of air. They have also been durable, as the most common way we have found to kill them is to knock a blade off. They do need some juice to get going, so we figured out a while ago that using the standard 40 amp relays will melt them. We jumped up to a big 70amp relay and have had no issues.

We were having heat issues with the Wagoneer, and moved to one of these fans from a stock mechanical fan that had a new clutch and it cured the problem. In three seasons of racing, we never had a failure. We did notice the old fan was a bit wobbly and changed it out as preventative maintenance when we got to the Hammers. We swapped it in Monday morning and we qualified, did some prerunning, went through contingency, and ran it in the race until it failed.

Now our question is do we blow up our entire cooling system (24x19 dual pass radiator) and go all Ultra4 with a bigger behind our head radiator, or just step up to some better Spal fans? Mechanical fan is out of the question.

What about two fans? Maybe give up flow in exchange for backup? Wire seperately?

Interesting thread on pirate4x4 right now about our class. Sounds like the winner had some tires that don't meet the rules (see them below). We started reading this on the way home and it's blowing up.

The rules say red cards have to be thrown within 30 minutes of the end of the event, so too late to do anything about it; but the thread seems to be trashing what should have been a flawless run. Also some allegations that they were the ones that red carded the English team last year for running sticky tires.

Quote:
6.4.9 WHEELS & TIRES
6.4.9.1 The intent of the tire rule for the modified class is to restrict tire use to only standard production models designed, sold, and advertised for use on highway vehicles. Therefore all tires used in competition shall be readily available to the public from any local distributor. Tires with special construction, compounds, etc. created for the sole purpose of competition will not be allowed.
6.4.9.2 Tires must be DOT-approved, with a maximum outside diameter of 37" (or equivalent), as specified on the tire’s sidewall by the original manufacturer.

Mike didn't file the card because he wants to beat them driving but they sure as hell shouldn't have been running those tires. The tires aren't the reason they won but rules are rules. Dave Cole would have been in a real predicament had someone filed the card because Falken is one of the bigger sponsors but the tires are clearly not available to the public like the rules state. Knowing that, he still gave the go ahead for people to run them. The guy in the thread that posted the email from Falken stating that they weren't available to the public until 2015 gives them a real black eye.

I don't see how you can allow those tires to compete but blacklist comp compound treps that anyone can buy........other than maxxis not giving U4 any money as a sponsor.

We are running the East Coast Ultra4 races:
April 5 Superlift Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas
June 28 Badlands
September 13 Sturgis, Kentucky

Not sure we will do anything else. Hopefully some fun stuff.

Yep. Sounds like a few companies that were running them put them on their web site store to give the impression they were available to all, but that email says otherwise.

Two fan does not give you a backup if one dies. It will suck through the one not working instead of through the radiator.

Spal fans are really not that expensive and nobody debates how well they work.
