Default silver lake sand dune question .

Does anyone know if you can drive from a campground to the dunes with Terra tires on the back of your street legal jeep, without police bothering you. Or is it best to trailer it ? Thanks.

This has been discussed and the conclusion was it only legal if you have two (2) or more dune flags.

Probably best to flat tow unless (2) dune flags are used.

I've ran Terra tires on the front and rear of my CJ7 for years and never had an issue.

You'll be fine with them as long as the rest of the jeep is fairly legal. You cannot get pulled in by a strap anymore, has to be a solid towbar.

I've seen people drive around with paddles, I can't imagine terra tires being much of a legal issue as long as the rest of the vehicle is reasonable. Seems like they have much bigger things to worry about around there.

Edit: now that you mention it, I'd go with (5) flags. Two in the front, one top of vehicle, and two in the back. I've found that some places require truck nuts upon entry.

derbydude, you must understand that these guys like messing with people - but in the mix of answers you did get true information.

Just one flag is needed, a flag (or multiple flags) means nothing on the street. If the rest of the jeep is somewhat stock looking, street legal, and you are driving safely the local police will have no reason to check tires for the DOT marking.

you may have wanted to post this in the general tech, or some other sub-forum than the pub.

Unfortunately now a days he would get the same retarded answers in the tech sections as he does here. When someone asks a normal, serious question on a 4x4 site I would like to think they could get a semi serious answer considering that IS what the site is for.

They let people ride around in the back of pickups on the streets of silver lake.

They won't care. People drive on paddles all the time.

Only thing I've ever had trouble with up there at all is spark arresters on bikes and quads. (Yes that's dnr at the entrance not the cops on the road)

These posts are flagged by members in the tech area, and they are quickly taken care of. I see 1730 flagged posts in the last 6 months, none by you, so I figured I would let you know how to help the tech section stay helpful!

Do they do a DB test and a spark arrestor probe on every quad pulling in?

if the jeep is not way out of line for being on the street, and you aren't driving like an idiot to draw attention to you and have cops looking for reasons to pull you over, then you will be fine.

There are very few stories of people getting stopped of that petty of of reason. Not sayign it doesn't happen, but the majority of the time, there is some other reason that caused the cops to pull him over in the first place, even if they said the tires were the reason.

That said, they do NOT like seeing people tow vehicles on the road with straps, as mentioned above. That one will get you stopped.
