Default SP shoot kill man in Ludington

LDN:

A 68-year-old man was shot and killed by a Michigan State Police trooper Tuesday night while the trooper was responding to a possible 911 hangup call, the Michigan State Police has confirmed to the Ludington Daily News.

The trooper said the man pointed a gun at him when he arrived on the scene at the Dennis Road residence and that he shot the man, who died later at the hospital.

The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Troopers were called to the scene of a possible 911 hangup call.

"As the trooper contacted occupants of the residence, a 68-year-old male confronted the trooper with a weapon," police stated. "The trooper fired one shot, striking the suspect."

The man was transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Mason County Sheriff's Office, the Ludington Police Department and Life EMS.

The Michigan State Police mobile crime lab crew has cleared the scene.

The area is still cordoned off.

State police are required to follow strict guidelines in the discharge of weapons, the agency stated.

"MSP policy permits officers to point or discharge a firearm in self-defense or defense of another when he or she reasonably believes there is imminent danger of death or great bodily harm," the agency stated.

I don't see an issue here. Looks like it was a good shoot by the Trooper.

I agree... If the trooper fired 15 times, then I could see a problem...

911 hang up? Husband beating wife, wife calls 911, husband takes phone away... At least that's the way I read it.

Kind of how I saw it too. Not enough information to make that determination though. It's just a guess.

What we do know is that a guy pointed a firearm at a State Trooper responding to a hang up call at the residence. Trooper put him down. Pretty clear cut right there. Glad the Trooper was able to act fast enough to make it home to his family that night.

I'm seriously wondering if PaperMan didn't get the response he was looking for when he made this post.

Not to argue but we don't know that the guy pointed a firearm at the trooper.

In any case I feel for the troopers family and the family of the man shot. I won't speculate but until details come out I won't place fault on the man. Given current details the officer did his job.

I posted it as we seen to have a fair amount of folks looking into and talking about shootings in the state.

I have been talking with a few on some details the locals are dishing out. Seems the 911 call wasnt placed by anybody at that home. The mans dogs were going ape shit so the Mrs. answered the door and told the old man the cops were here. He came to the door with a gun and the rest is up in the air.

Hmmm... Guess we'll just have to wait and see what details come out.

the article says he did.

I don't care why the trooper was called the the house. Point a gun at anyone and you can expect to be shot. I don't care if it was the trooper or the neighbor or a lost nun.

The second a firearm is pointed at someone... both lives are now on the table. All that matters in both of their world's is who pulls the trigger first. The man that wants to live more is the one who will walk away. The aftermath is up for debate but we weren't there and it's long been known that the media is probably the worst source of information on these matters.
