We tried to foster a Chow/lab mix from an adoptathon at petco once. $125 and he was 'ours'. I think it was the Ingham county animal shelter. The apartment complex didn't want us to have him because he was part chow and they can be dangerous I guess. So I had to take him back. They tried to return my money but I told them to keep it. I miss that dog and I only had him for a week or so.

I am to the point of frustration I just wanna give up. Muskegon county humans society is just as difficult. I just don't get it. Seems most have hrs 10-5 and they require multiple visits. That's impossible. I can't leave my job multiple times to drive an hr for a visitation. Its like only unemployed/retired couples with a fenced in yard are allowed to adopt. They want me to bring our dog in for interaction. I get that, but bringing my dog there isn't gonna measure a good reaction. She'll be skidish, scared, nervous etc... she acts like a completely different dog at home vs anywhere else. And biggest is she is always very unsure of new people. Bringing her to a shelter, I know won't work out.

Default animal shelters

That was my problem with Ginger.

Frustrated I did go to shelter and just picked a dog. They were open for 4 hours one Saturday a month. Got home and Ginger freaked out. Within 2 hours dog was back to shelter. I didn't ask for my money back. They were still mad, said I didn't give it enough time.
I knew that no amount of time would, change it. We had to wait for Ginger to recover. It took weeks, I thought I'd be putting her down.
I made the decision to get a puppy, a pure bred English Springer Spaniel.
All who knew GinGin thought she'd kill a pup. I took that chance, if she had hurt Murphy I'd put her down.
I took the puppy to a neighbors house. Went home and got Gin Gin, I introduced them at neighbors. Gin Gin was interested in him, she'd growled some but watched him closely. I loaded them up and headed home. I put them in the our yard and went into pole barn. When I looked out they were playing. Murphy was then called her 200 dollar boy toy. And I gave him Right in his name.

Someone had suggested the Neutral ground. Not sure if that was why it worked. But it did.

Ginger was a ESS/ Aussie mix. Always concerned about everything.
She knew that Murphy had a different anatomy. She'd "check" him out, she did this all the time. You could tell her to check him, he'd roll over she'd check. She had also freaked when I had him neutered, he didn't care.

Don't let the frustration make you give up there is the Right one out there just waiting to be in a loving home with a 4 legged buddy.

I hope you have a Merry Christmas.

The dog pound on Brown Road adopts out strays without the hassle. At least they did a few years ago when we got our second boxer from there...

Some shelters are a joke. We went to the Southeastern Michigan Shelter in Madison Heights and were denied because we "took too long to decide". Apparently if we rushed into a 15 year commitment we'd have been ok though. Found North Star Border Collie Rescue and they were fantastic - if that's what kind of dog you want (high strung working dog)

We adopted our first dog 35 years ago from the Humane Society on Brown Rd. Picked out a dog, paid for the shots & we were out. It's sad that they have made it so hard for people to adopt now.

The wife and I rescued a dog from the Humane Society on Brown Rd this past summer and transported the dog to a recue in Holland Mi. We spent a few hours there with the dog, filled out paper work and down the road we went. No problems.

There was another dog we wanted to take but it had been there less than a week so it was caught up in the system and we couldn't take him too.

I have been considering getting another dog so Bud can have some company. I am not sure I'd pass grade after hearing these stories. It sounds like most of these shelters make as many problems as they try to solve.

I have found its more the private shelter/rescues then the county ran ones. I haven't even got past the email stage with any of these private shelters.

Hey Jon I know they are most likely to far for you but for anybody else closer to Ohio the place I dealt with says they understand a lot of owners just dont do the shots and dont have thousands of dollars in vet records...They told me to pass along their website and they will help anybody they can. They are more focused on just finding good families to take in their animals.

I just got a year end email from them showing all the dogs that found homes this past year. They found places for a bunch of their dogs. My dog Percy is listed on the website as one of their Happy Tails.

I've been flying this whole dog search under the family radar. Well I brought my wife up to speed Tuesday on what I have been doing and turns out she's been using a different vet then the one I knew of. And while yes my dog is past due on her rabies shot, she's only a couple months overdue vs yrs overdue according to the vet I gave contact info for.

Wife just got home from vet after getting the dogs rabies shot. Talking with the actual doctor, he said he was turned away from several rescues before going to a county ran shelter to get his personal dog.

The thing is, rescues are run and staffed by people who love and want to save dogs. Some are level headed, some are not far off cat-lady status. One of our cad designers is a volunteer with a rescue. She has a 'foster' pit bull now that's the sweetest most wonderful dog, except if people come to her house, it tries to bite them. And she can't kennel it because it will bite the people at the kennel. So she can't ever take vacations anymore. But otherwise the sweetest dog...

So you get that, a lot of people who think every dog can be rehabilitated. Or they get attached and don't want to let them go.

In general, most rescues don't want to adopt dogs out that will be outside dogs.

We've got 4 dogs over the years from rescues. All were a bit overbearing. The last one was from Midwest beagle rescue(BREW), which normally they require home visits and such, but waived for us, after realizing that we are very experienced with the specifics of owning beagles.

I will never go back to the humane society though. Went once to look at a beagle, and brought my two beagles to interact. Got accosted twice by protesters thinking I was trying to give up the dogs. Here I am trying to rescue a damn dog, and am being screamed at for being an animal killer. Fing protesters.

Stopped into the Barry county shelter yesterday but didn't find one we clicked with. But they did have two different husky mix's that were pretty good looking and seemed to be well behaved. One was a 6 month old that was light brown and looked just like a Siberian. Not sure what else he was but he's gonna be big. Was already 45 lbs and his paws were massive. And another that had the colorings of a rot, but the physical appearance of a Siberian.

Shelters are depressing.

But we found a local family on CL that is moving and couldn't take there pooch with. Jack Russell/rat terrier mix. Named captain jack.

I have a jack russell, best dog ever. Ours is very well behaved for a jack, only problem she hates others dogs except for two. One being hosemonkeys lab, the other is the neighbors up at the cottage wiener dog. The older she gets the grumpier she gets as in growling at people, but that's as far as it goes.
