Default Turbo 6.5 bad diesel?

A guy wants to trade me a 98ish 6.5 turbo says it starts hard and runs like shit because it needs bad diesel cleaned from tank. He said if I drained tank and put fresh diesel it would run does this make sense?

Maybe, but probably not. More than likely there is something wrong with the motor, injector pump failure is common in that series.

A lot of people do not like the 6.5 but then again there are a lot that swear by it. I had one and it got great gas mileage, had good power, and was reliable other than having to remount the PMC I believe it was called. Bad injector pump could be what's wrong with that one you are looking at.

I know several people who have had them before. Some are good just like the non turbo 6.2s and others are junk. Several of them have a major problem. The blocks crack on them. Why? Still a mystery to many, but i would have him run fresh diesel in it for you and run some sea foam through it a few times and see if anything changes. check for blow by and blue/black smoke under heavy throttle. Have the engine running and take the oil fill cap off and if shit is getting all over your hand, walk away.

I specialize in the 6.2 / 6.5 's .... if it had a bad injection pump it wouldn't run at all. sounds like there is a few different issues with that truck. Hard starting is a glow plug issue .... 9 times out of ten.

when it runs like garbage... have to see what color smoke.. Id bet a head gasket issue. may be a bad lift pump- starving the injection pump for fuel. There could be a few combinations of issues that are causing that truck problems.

as an old guy I have seen this. IF no one has treated the fuel for some time it can and will grow bacteria in the tank till it plugs the system. symptoms are... no acceleration and hard starts. I have seen it so bad the tank looked like it was full of black jello. had to have the tank flushed out and blow out the lines to the pumps. its usually worst in cold temps as it makes the fuel hard to draw and it cavitates the injection pump and lift pump.
