Bill's Custom Fab, Inc. in Mt. Pleasant is a great place to buy your pipe. Way cheaper than Alro. I got some 1-1/4" sch. 40 in December for $1.21/ft ($25.41 for 21'). They also have a drop rack that they sell material from for 50% off. Good place to shop for steel.

hmmm. I am in bay city area and may be interested in helping out with a group buy. Ive been trying to put together a decent size order on my own, for things I will be building soon, so the more the better. I can do the pickup, I usually have to take the trailer anyways because I buy full uncut bars (somtimes 24ft) when possible.

And incase anyone is wondering, yes the more you buy the cheaper it gets.

If anyone is interested that is.

Pipe makes great rock sliders and bumpers. It has a thicker wall then pipe making it harder to bend and easier to weld. This wall also makes it heavier then tube in most cases(depends on the grades).

A proper design is more vital then sheer strength in any cage. The tube does dent easier that's a fact. Tube has a thinner wall then pipe(in most cases) and that's why it dents easier. Because of this thicker wall pipe is heavier then tube. In many cases the fabrication process is the same.

But, if you are buying pipe because it is cheaper your not looking hard enough. A500 structural pipe will run you between $2.50 and $4 a foot. If you look around (pirate) you can find the same size tube for about a third more.

Some of you are thinking you can head down and pick up a ton at the scrap yard and clean it up. That's all well and good but you are forgetting about the grades. And there are tons of grades.

For the most part though you will find grade A500. But without the stamp who knows what your buying.

My dual layer cage/body will encompass around 300 feet of tube. The sheer weight difference is causing me to use tube instead of pipe.

Don't forget that you can buy a HF pipe bender that will do close to 90* bends for alot less then a Tube bender. This is why most people chose pipe for low budget projects.

I find pipe works great. I also took the harbor freight bender and polished the cast dies, put some lubricant on them and i can make bents much more than 90* without a kink to be found. Polishing and lubricating the dies helps the pipe slide in the die much better.

All of this was made using the harbor freight bender, with no kinks even with the stinger and grill hoop, that are all over 90* bends.

So how is everyone polishing their kinker dies? Also what material would make for a good slug when using 1-1/4" schedule 40?

Haha. Thanks, I was going to ask you if I could after I found out how they were polished. But I'll look around for some more info on how to do it and then polish and paint all the dies for you.

It makes sense to polish the dies, also putting lube on helps keep the pipe from expanding during the bend that will cause the pipe to jam and thus kink. Die builders at my shop stress Class 1 ( polished finishes) on form steel details. Most of the die parts I machine need a super slick surface and since it travel through a prog die the steel will get hotter at every hit. This is where lube sprayers come in. Helps to keep the steel from distorting.
