Default new phone questions

OK, I'm in the market for a new phone, couple question

Do I stay with Verizon and their high costs?
What are other's using, how's the service up north? at silver lake? and southwest MI (Kzoo area)
I am still on the unlimited data plan but we barely use more then 2gb per month,
Do I buy my phone outright and stay unlimited data, or take their offer for a cheaper price on new phone and have to change to a data plan
and finally what are opinions on phone choice, currently thinking
Droid Maxx or Ultra, or even Samsung Galaxy 4

I know there have been other similar discussions, including CC's change from Iphone to Droid, (how's that doing for you Kelly?) just figured I's start my own with my specific questions.

Stay with Verizon. Anything else is just annoying.
I wish I would have bought my phone outright and kept my unlimited data....oh well.
Pick your poison. I am still happy with my GS4

I have the droid razor HD (obviously). Love it. Had sprint. Prices weren't much better and I could never carry on a phone service. Paying 156 a month 2 phones with 2gb. Use like 400kb average (WiFi everywhere). Sprint was 186 2 phones unlimited.

I switched from AT&T to Verizon and I've not seen a real difference. I can tell you that my purchase of the Droid Maxx (not the razor, or the HD, just the Droid Maxx) has been the best thing I've done in my life in a long time. I don't know if it's going to a droid from an iphone for so long, or the incredible battery life, but it is great. QI charging is wonderful, I don't have to jailbreak the phone to get it to function how I like, and the integration with google is amazing.

Battery update: It has been off the charger for 17 hours, 85% battery left, wifi on the whole time and screen has been on for 1 hour, 41 minutes.

My worry is snowmobiling season. My AT&T service was incredible, even in the BFE in the UP. Verizon's map isn't very good up there, but I've yet to experience it first hand, so I can't comment on how it works up there.

It comes down to how often you go out of "metropolitan areas"

I couldn't deal without verizon or sprint because I'm too far out to get service with most aything else.

I've had sprint for the past 7 years, not many complaints. Now that I have internet I could probably go to something that isn't unlimited data... I'm on with my mom and sister and we are paying 150 a month for unlimited everything.

I think your verizon coverage in the UP should be just fine. Mine was when I was up there this summer.

I am in need of a new phone, are your battery claims legit or complete exagerations like your snowfall claims? My biggest beef with my current droid phone is battery life. At 2.5 years old it can die with just over an hour of screen time, sometimes even shorter.

x2 they've added a lot of towers up there. Every year it seems to work better and better with Verizon.

Also I added the app juice defender to my phone and I can almost go 2 full days without a charge. Also when snowmobiling, I try and bury the phone under a few layers of jacket/bibs and clothing. Last season a few times I stuck the phone in the inside pocket of my jacket and it seemed to die in no time.

My droid razor HD battery life is amazing. WiFi/4g on. Use it most the day. Talk to people a few hours a day. Tapatalk pics etc. Off charger at 6am. Last night at 1030 when plugging back in it was 47%.

No lie. No bullshit. I'll try to remember to screenshot tonight before charging

that's my problem, buy 2 phones or change plans, I think for our usage we will just change plans are have to teach the wife to use wifi when she can. Her phone is at 1.2 gb in 2 weeks, mine is at .4 gb
we'll probably have to try a 4gb plan, I think that is about the same cost as out unlimited.

Kelly, why did you switch from AT&T to Verizon? I ask because I can get a discount on AT&T from my work. Not sure I want to switch. I haven't been too thrilled with my uverse from them.

Just switched from ATT to Verizon - happy so far. Verizon works great in Alpena where ATT did NOT!

We got the MotoX...love it. I like the Google platform - syncs with my search history etc with Chrome on my laptop. With the Google plat form you can ask it to do certain tasks like Apple's Siri - although this doesn't talk back to you - at least not that I've discovered yet. I also like the feature to quickly flick your wrist twice and the camera pulls up automatically even from "sleep" mode - something simple but I feel like usually when you want to take a picture it's in a quick moment and this makes it easy...maybe more so will be great with a baby/kids around. We bought the phones on Amazon (prime) through Verizon (brand new, with contract) for a much better price than in the store.

Didn't you just get married...?

Anyway.

We are on Verizon with the unlimited data. I'll be buying my next phone out right to keep the unlimited data. With me fucking off on the interwebs and streaming music and Kerry doing actual work stuff we us a ton of data each month.

I think my next phone is going to be the Note 3 when you start seeing people sell them for less than $600-$650.

I bought my last phone, Razr Maxx, on Amazon before the whole death of unlimited data and I have to say besides the first night having a little issues with it activating it was a pretty good experience. Fast shipping and it saved me like $50 over buying it in the store.

I won't charge my phone tonight, and I'll post up my battery stat tomorrow. On AC, this is how most of the droid maxx consumptions look:

If you sit down in the car and surf the web while someone else is driving how long do you estimate your battery would last? Continuous screen on web surfing or otherwise usage?

I am not certain. I do use google music non-stop while driving, sometimes it is cached music, sometimes it is not. I can use upwards of 200 meg in an hour of driving and I only have a 3-4% drop in battery. But the screen is off for most of that time.

I would suggest browsing the droid forums.

Even though XDA calls it the ultra forum, it covers the ultra and the MAXX. It is more for "hardcore" people who are rooting, custom roms, etc:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra

Android Central is full of derps, but there are some good threads. Here is the MAXX forum:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-maxx/

Here is a AC thread on the battery life of the MAXX, you will find 90% of people say it is the best battery they have ever seen in a phone. The other 10% say it is a horrible battery.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/mot...tery-life.html

Not only does the phone have a stupidly over sized battery in it, it has separate cores on the processor to handle down time and low draw issues. So even though it barely uses the battery at idle, it is incredibly responsive to "ok google now" and other voice actuated items. Be careful when people are bitching about their battery life, because some people have installed custom roms that make the phone faster, but take huge amounts of energy to do so.

I just want my battery to last 8 hours unplugged. I don't really use my phone for much, but currently I am lucky to get an hour out of it, I could get a new battery, but my buttons do not all work (dropped it in water) and the processor is getting very slow, probably due to age and being dropped in water and who knows what else a million times.

10 hours in to my day. No charging. Heavy use. My WiFi is on. Just not connected at work. Keep work work and personal personal.
