If you have a plate tied to a flat bed trailer and it breaks, and you go and steal another similar trailer and put your plate on it, then chances are nobody will ever be the wiser. Especially since many trailers have been repainted and don't have a VIN plate. I know my trailer had a sticker for ID that has since faded and ripped away. Very easy to paint over/destroy if you wanted to.

Heck, I'll bet if you had two of the same cars that were same basic year and color and only registered one and just moved the plate back and forth; nobody would ever notice. I don't think I have ever been pulled over and had the cop check my vin against my registration. Again, if you put a truck plate on a car, or the make model doesnt' match then I can see there being issues.
to top this off, to plate your own "home built" trailer, all you need is a weight slip, and sign an affidavit stating how/where you got the materials you used to build it with, if anything was new, they want to see receipts, but you could say its stuff you've had sitting around for years and never used for anything, and no longer have receipts for. They really only want to know if they got their taxes, so if this stuff was purchased from a business where you paid taxes, or bought the stuff off the street, they want to know how much you paid, so they can tax you on it.

There's no inspections or anything.

That's pretty much always been this way too, (for a long time anyways) I plated a dune buggy trailer I had back in 1988, and this is all I had to do then. Only difference was then I had to bring the registration each year to re-new the plate.

That's the one, thanks.

I took an old pop-up and made a utility trailer. I went to scale and got a weight slip and to SOS.
Got a plate based on weight. Any trailer in that weight range the plate could be placed on and no way to "prove" it wasn't the original trailer. I can keep making trailers all my life and plate it.Of course can only have plate on one. But I never will have to go in and re buy. But I will have to eventually get/make a bigger trailer and then would need to get a new plate.
So SOS, permanent trailer plates, are losing State money.

My trailer registration, which was based off a weigh slip and a bill-of-sale, specifically says "unknown origin"

Yes, it's pretty much the standard single place car hauler size.

Well, smart assness aside, There's a pretty good chance the thief is using the trailer. They would not have bothered to take the car off id they were scrapping it, it's really easy to scrap a car without a title.

Cut it in half.

They did use it.

I finally got a reply from the police.

My trailer was used to steal another car from the lot. Police described it as a "supped up hot rod". So they dumped my car off the trailer so that they could load another car on it. The police didn't realize the car was mine and thought it was used to break in, that's why it was impounded.

OK, makes sense now. Might be a fighting chance of getting your trailer back.

Our enclosed snowmobile trailer was stolen out of my parents drive way in Davison one fall. It popped up in downtown flint on some neighborhood side street dropped on its tongue, cops called us a few days later cause someone called that it was sitting in front of their house. So keep your hopes up.

You would think they would do a bit of investigating before they just assumed!... Like talk to the storage owners.. Good grief!

I saw an identical trailer like yours just a few minutes ago. Rails looked identical. I thought it might be yours, but yours didn't have ugly chrome hub caps.

You clearly can't put hubcaps on a stolen trailer.
That would be stupid.

That would be unheard of. Like those stick on mustaches that people use to disguise who they really are. Gets me every time.

Trailer I saw didn't appear to have the reflectors on it, but just like the mustaches, they could have removed them.

It looked a little beat up. Tandem axle. Black. Same rails like yours Bruce. Wood deck.
