Default Late 90's 2wd into a 4x4??

Mid-late 90's 3500. I know the 4x4's are independent and the 2wd's are a straight axle but is something like this even possible without MAJOR work?

Look at my thread in this section. If you can weld and fab it's an easy swap.

What I was looking at was a one ton, can't recall if it was a 3500 or a 3500hd that had a straight axle under it already with leaf springs.
I browsed the net and found a couple of threads but didn't know why there were the perches added to the front of the frames for the leaves. I was hoping that a solid 4x axle could just be "bolted" in.
It's kind of pointless because what I was looking at got sold.
I've got a bid in on something else and will know Thursday morning if it's mine or not. Got my fingers crossed.......
