Default F150 help please (another update)

my current 99' xlt 5.4 4x4 extended cab is being grumpy. It does have 300k miles. but runs pretty good (minor lifter/cam tick). trans rebuilt, and shifts good. once warm tick goes away.

HOWEVER, I jump started it as it sat for a month or so and the battery was dead. since I did that I have had all sorts of problems.

First it started with the radio not working in reverse or drive and coming back on in park or nuetral. AND, the dash lights wont shut off!? the warning lights stay on after ignition off and key out (they are dimmer than when ignition on but still on) the radio also stays on.

Today after having to jump it again (sat for weeks) then when running in park the start starts trying to start again. sounds terrible. when in drive or reverse it quits trying but put it back in park and starter fires! THEN I drove it three miles and my drivers window tried to automatically roll down twice without being asked to. WTF?! Got him put it in park and start starts grinding again.

LOL... what is going on!? its making me crazy.

Google gem module.

Fords seem to have issues in 99-02ish vehicles with them. Both our explorer and our superduty of that era had issues

That's probably it. Identical symptoms. I'll order one since it seems its dealer or online only.

I suggest trying the dealer first since they are typically a vin specific part and you don't want to end up with the wrong one.

Hopefully they still make one for your truck. I had a LOT of difficulty trying to find one for my superduty.

Normally the reason they fail is because of water intrusion, I would look for signs of water first and fix that before you put a new one in. May have to have the windshield removed and resealed.

That was the issue on my superduty, windsheild seal was bad. Couldn't find water entry on our explorer.

I believe it was around $500-600 for the GEM in the superduty. I never ended up replacing it, I traded the truck in.

Humm. Yeah. May cut my Loss's on it. (Only got 1300 in it). Afraid to put another 600-700 in it. If I can get 1300 maybe I should take it and let it go?

I'd probably let her go for what you can. Doesn't bigbchevy still have one for sale on here? Seemed like a good buy.

I don't really need it. Its nice to have it sitting around but doesn't get used but once a month or two.

Have you tried a good battery?

Electronics need full power to work correctly and can do funny things if the voltage is too low.

Exactly... My 04 was doing all kinds of crazy shit. Voltmeter was still showing decent power, and the idiot light wasn't on, but stereo would work, then not work, no dash lights, but heat and headlights, no gauges, then they'd work... Finally I pulled the alternator and took it into a rebuilders, he pulled it apart while I was there and the brushes were worn clean through the commutator... Rebuilt it for under $150...

Might be something to check anyway...

I wasn't trying to be an Ass earlier, just sounded like the car from Stephen Kings "Christine"...

I have thick skin...

update. so its been dry for a while. when I last put it away lights were left on dim etc. So I put a charger on it and let it charge. then fired it up, and let it run.

NO starter firing while idling. No warning lights after shutting it off. everything works as it should. Dome light turn on when door opens off when closes. Theft light flashes like "normal" after door is shut. no "drawing" off the battery like before.

The radio still shuts off when going into drive or reverse. The dome light does also. wipers work sometimes in drive but sometimes not.

Other than that its allot better. I assume because it was sitting out in the feild getting rained on and allot of moisture/dew. Now sitting at the house the last few days its been real dry. I know its gonna rain tonight so I moved tool box around so I could get it in the garage instead of the buick. I want to keep it dry for now until I can track down the issue hopefully this weekend.

I think I should be investigating the moisture issue first (windsheild is cracked). seems better when its been dry out. I can pull fuse panel and gem apart and check for water and corrosion and clean it up with electric cleaner and see where that puts me? I can also put my volt meter on it this weekend I guess and test the output of the ALT.

Gonna leave the charger on it tonight and let it charge. Then in the AM I will take it off and let it sit till I get home from work and then test battery voltage.

I have a hard time thinking its alt or battery. but who knows.

think im on the right track?

IF I can get this resolved without a ton of money I will take it somewhere and get a new windsheild and make sure its all sealed up (assuming its the moisture issue). BUT, it needs to deal with it or it has to go! this is meant to be the winter/bad weather beater so the regal can stay home in the garage

I agree with this, as stated it worked better after charging the battery, so first thing I would do is install a fresh battery and check to make sure ground cable is clean and then go from there. good luck

So... after charging all night (and part of the morning, as I forgot to take it off, and had the wife take it off) I get home and couldnt find my meter (just moved into house, and had to move toolbox out of the way to get truck in garage).

So I opened the door and dome light turned on. closed it and it turned off. good start. theft light flashing "normally". So I turned key on, and radio came on and wipers. cool. Started it. all still working.

then I put it in drive. GUESS WHAT!? The radio and dome light and wipers stayed on!!! HOLY CRAP!?

So, I pulled off wiper cowl and saw a bunch of white household grade sealant that was cracked and seperated from steal and window. Hummm...

So, the only thing not working at this point that worked a few weeks ago was the blower motor. that doesnt turn on at all right now. other than that everything works!

So is it that the GEM is drying up more and more or a good charge helped it? not sure still... LOL. still will pull gem and fuse panel apart and check for corosion and clean them up and put some dielectric grease and then get wind sheild replaced professionally!

I am sure it is the gem drying out, maybe you got lucky and didn't do any permanant damage to it. Lay under the dash with the doors closed and have someone hit the windshield with a garden hose, you will see it run in and drip right on the back of the gem module/fuse box.
