Through all the stuff I've bought on Craigslist one thing I've had further reinforced is that people are lazy and often don't delete ads when things are sold. Therefore I usually ask if it's still available before wasting my time writing out a long response asking questions or what not just to get a reply of "It's sold" or maybe even no reply at all.

As far as the New York area code goes... There are search engines that let you search the entire country for stuff on Craigslist. Depending on what you are selling someone may be willing to drive the 8-10 hours to come get it.

I guess if it were me I'd keep going down the path until the guy wanted to pay me extra and have his shipping company come pick it up.
You sound like a scammer

often I forget about scammers, and I just put "this"

but am trying to get better about adding enough detail to let them know I'm actually interested, and not a scammer

I disagree about the MS paint, when I see a number or email embedded in a pic, it's usually on an item like a 2006 jeep for $2717 and is no way a real deal, so I pretty much figure anyone who take the time to embed their info in a pic is trying to make it hard for CL to flag them as spam before it gets listed.
