I haven't heard a lot about them. Boost is alright from what I hear. Aren't the prepaid companies owned by larger ones like sprint, t-Mobil, etc?

If by "home" you mean wherever you wander, I would consider the $45 Walmart phone that is really just an older generation smart phone on Verizon's network.

I want a phone that stays at home 99% of the time but can be given to my kids from time to time as they get older and go more places. I am hoping to spend around $100 a year.

Don't want another monthly bill.

Verizon has a plan I am considering that may do it.

I was wondering if anyone knows of another.

Go talk to some drug dealers. They'd know more.

Or speak up Gl4x4 ers

This isn't exactly a complete solution for what you're thinking, but if you sign up for a google voice number and have an extra smartphone or iphone/ipod touch, you can download an app that will allow you to make phone calls over your wifi network.

So, I guess you could do that with a pre-paid smartphone and just add minutes when they need to use it "away from home".

I had a AT&T go phone I paid like 30 bucks a month for just mins but I used it as a phone and mad calls txt and what not daily so I would imagine it would be cheaper as a house phone

When I had it (2-4 years ago) it was just a basic phone because I wasn't makeing much and couldn't justify spending a lot on a phone but I'm guessing now they have more up to date phones

Just my .02

I sell phones. It's a lame job, but it pays the bills.

Anyway, you can get a go phone with AT&T for $100 a year with 1000 minutes, no texting

Tracfone is probably the most affordable for what you're looking for. It's what my parents use.

I have a Nexus 4 with AIO Wireless prepaid. I wouldn't buy a Nexus 4 (can't buy a new one anymore anyway) as I've had mine since it came out and it's about to get replaced for the second time.

T-mobile sucks since the failed merger. Used them for almost five years and chucked them the day AIO Wireless (ATT's MVNO) went national.

I think we pay $10 /month to have a Verizon Home Connect with it's own number. Uses a regular home phone connected to it. I bought one of those 4 packs of cordless phones that uses one base unit and it lets us have phones throughout the house still.

I only suggest this because I completely missed the post about giving it to your kids.

Tracfone is not as reliable as the other networks as they use SOME AT&T towers and SOME verizon towers, but not all of them. Also, it's $100 for 800 minutes, or $40 every 3 months for 400 minutes.

Verizon home phone connect is $20 a month unlimited calling, and AT&T has the same thing. AT&T also has prepaid home phone connect for $20 a month but you have to pay $100 for the device. The verizon hpc is only available with a two year commitment.

I just started on the WalMart Straittalk plan. 45 buck a month for unlimited everything talk/text/data. The phone I bough runs off only the Verizon towers, so I still have the Verizon network. but for half the price.

My wife has smart talk from walmart, by far the best signal of all the non contract services.

Went on a 3 day kayak trip with several friends all different companies and hers performed best, Im switching as soon as my phone dies.

So you're telling me these cheap ass little phones use CDMA and GSM towers?

I think you don't know what you're talking about.

They certainly do share towers. Probably not cdma and gsm on the same phone, but they certainly do.

can't you add a line to your current contract? most companies seem to allow up to 5 phones per contract and charge like $10 per phone to add an additional phone after the first.

Actually, they do. You just read it wrong. My wife and I both have straight talk. Her phone uses AT&T, mine uses sprint, my old one used Verizon. It's dependent on the phone.

OP, make sure you know which phone uses which towers. I didn't and I'm stuck with sprint.

Some phones use some verizon towers but not all of the towers. Other phone models use AT&T towers but don't use all of the towers.
