Default Best winch for kids XJ

Trish wants to get a winch put on her XJ for Christmas, (yes I said the C word ). She's buying a dd this winter and plans to eventually make some axle upgrades.....but for now it's stock other than a 6 1/2 lift and 35's. Looking for something fairly inexpensive that will do the job. Thoughts on best for my buck?

I have the HF 12k winch on my YJ and it works freaking great. She can likely get by with the lessor 8k winch.

Harbor Freight is hard to beat for the occasional recovery.

Kerry got me the Smittybilt 10k with synthetic rope for Christmas 3 years ago or so. It has pulled out plenty of heavy things and never let me down. It's loud. It's slow. It's cheap. But it works when I need it to.

I put my smitybult xrc8 on 2 years ago and have used it a few dozen times. For $280 shipped (at the time) you can't beat it. The problem with the HF is it is slow. The snotty built breaks and I'm told you can't get parts for it. Maybe look in to the value line warn winches.

That seems like a pretty good deal for a winch with rope on it.

I think I'd leave the rope on hers for safety's sake.

Look into the milemarker sec8.....mine has been rock solid and they can be had <300$....from what i have seen it seems to be a level nicer than smittybuilt / harbor freight but i may be mistaken. Only annoyance i have with it is its got a fair amount of resistance to free spooling but definitely not anything difficult by any means

Good point, even tho she probably won't use it that much.

Checked prices on rope with hook, they sure have dropped in the last year! guess I'll buy myself a Christmas gift too

Make sure they have it (E10000) in stock before you get your hopes up. I fell for it a few weeks back.

That's what I had. Very happy with it. My only complaint was it is loud and a little slower then my warns. But at less then half the cost it wasn't a bad comprise.

I had the Smittybilt 10k on my YJ and It work good. But I bought and Rugged ridge 10.5k for the Jeep I have now. I bought it from Baseline 4x4 outfitters, they had a $50. rebate when I bought mine. Here is a link to the 8.5k with the rope.
