1. Most pits I have come in contact with are not small, they are typically 65-85lbs. Bigger than I want.
2. This may be true.
3. This may also be true.
4. I am not looking for protective, but this is a positive attribute.
5. Cool, but the pits I know are too big.

The other attributes I know of pits is that they are typically a bit on the drooly side with bigger jowels, they don't tolerate cold very well, and they can have issues being off leash around people and other animals from time to time.

It's not my loss, I like pits, I don't have a problem with them, but they are not the proper dog for me at this time. Thank you for the suggestion.

Uhh....not really. Especially if you're talking the true American Staffordshire terrier.

I fully understand there are pit mixes that are much smaller.

But hey, kickstand wants to buy a compact car but let's all try to sell him a fucking Excursion.

No, you'll definitely want a Freightliner Columbia.

I have to 2 rescue dogs.

Morgan - I got at 1 1/2yrs old and is now 10. Blue Healer mix 40lbs amazingly smart dog and loyal and loves TV. But she has torn both ACL's in the past 2 yrs and now has a limp and sheds like crazy.

Frank - I got when he was 8 and is now 10. He is a Shar Pei / Terrier mix. 50lbs Very strong and full of life, doesn't shed, he is the dummy of the group but very gentle and will not leave mine or my GF's side. This dog can leap over a 4' chain link fence from a stand still.

I wouldn't trade Bud if I could, but I've always liked border collies. They are great dogs and seem to be about the size of dog you're looking for, except the hair thing. they have long hair.

I didn't read through all seven pages of giant dog suggestions so my apologies if you've already nixed the border collie.

I have nixed them due to the hair, I think it will be too high of maintenance when out in the mud, pickers, thornies, burrs, etc. Cool dogs though.

I completely agree with you about the size thing too. Bud is 73lbs last I weighed him. He is a lot of dog to travel with. He does well with it, but my ranger is not big enough for him to be comfortable in the cab.

Have you thought about a St. Bernard?
Or...thinking out of the box, what about a Shetland Pony?

I think a 35-45 lb cat would be a great pet.
