So far, I changed the oil, lubed the chain, cleaned it up, moved the lights up to the top, re did the rollbar padding, and am in the process of re-locating the battery(s).

Oh yeah, couldn't forget the dune flag. ;)



It turns out the previous owner replaced the front end after the buggy hit a tree, but some of the parts he got were wrong. He has uneven a-arms with even spindles, so I went ahead and ordered a set of longer a-arms to work with the spindles I have. I also ordered a set of 4x4 hubs, wheels+ atv tires for the front.

Since finding the stock air filter for the engine wasn't too easy, I also ordered a UNI filter kit .

Tonight I began the battery relocation process. The previous owner had been using one of these 12v gel cell batteries to start the kart. He also gave me an extra one. So I decided to use both onboard and wire them in parallel to double my capacity. I am relocating them inside a plastic electrical box on the rack.





I wanted the extra capacity, because I'm going to hook up a radio in the kart:

Wired in a switch between the two batteries after reading about wiring them parallel. Apparently if one of the batteries is a little older, it can cause the other battery to go bad faster. So, to keep this from possibly happening, and to have a back up battery onboard just in case I drain it with the radio or lights, I went with the switch.

I also added some finger twist knobs to make the box quick release.

you might want to check the amperage capacity of the switch... if you haven't already. Not trying to belittle you, but i didn't see anything posted so I'm gonna raise the question.

The batteries are 7 amp. The switch was rated at 20 amp @ 250v.

I guess the only other thing I would mention is puttins something over the terminals so you don't accidentally short them out. spark plug boot?

Not a bad idea. I'll have to look into that.

huh?

I don't have a moped anymore, although I was looking for one as a project. I found this instead.

The current 2 wheeled contraptions in my garage are:

2005 Yamaha FZ6
2009 Kawasaki KLX250s
2005 Yamaha TW200 (might as well be a moped, but it's my wife's)
1972 Yamaha R5

We had 5 or 6 of those one summer at camp. Just one summer

We also ran them 3 to 12 hours a day pretty Much.

Beef up the front, I believe we replaced (or welded) every single spindle at some point.
Keep the engine oiled up, you should ne fine.
I can't remember anything else we encountered that wasn't because of daily beatings.

Looks like a fun project.

I ordered the heavy duty top a-arms. If the spindles break, I'll just have a grade 8 bolt welded in. I don't think we'll be too rough on it.

That's as long as they lasted. We bought new ones the next year. Those lasted 2 summers. We don't have go carts anymore. We probably have close to 15k (very conservative guess) people use our facilities, including activities, from June to August.

Hey now! The TW is a perfectly capable small motorcycle, I just rode mine to gladwin from plymouth a few weeks ago, and it's a tank on the trail. Just reeeeeaaally slow above 55 Definitely not a moped!

Cool go kart thing though, I always thought they looked like fun.

I really like the T-dub. I just wish it had a little more pep. I really would like to ride a new one to compare to hers. A TW350 would be sweet.

Here's some shots:

Finally the front end seems to be coming together.



I mounted the radio in waterproof outdoor products box that I use for kayaking .



I mounted a couple "tool tubes" to the top bars to store tools/extra fuel in. I am also a member at ADVrider.com and got the idea from there.



The Uni Filter and the "performance" 30mm intake. Does anybody know if it actually makes much of a difference? I just got it because it was aluminum and it shouldn't crack.



Just waiting for tars. :)

Let me make sure I got this right... you have fuel stored on top of the roll cage, on the outside of it, where you would land if you roll over... and trees can smack it while driving down trails... and in a re-purposed storage device.. and you and your wife sit under it... and it's above the exhaust... so if it leaks it would drop on to that...

Actually at the moment, there is nothing in them. I will be using a MSR fuel bottle that is rated for fuel or I may not store any fuel in them and keep a 1 gallon gas can on the rear rack depending on how much fuel it consumes. I don't plan on doing anything where I would come close to rolling over. Its for driving down two tracks and county roads.

Also, as I look around my garage, all of my bikes seem to have their fuel tanks precariously above the header pipes. Holy shit, I've got a garage full of death traps!!!
