Creepy and I just came home from the vet.
Rufas' ashes will come home Thursday.

Of all the rough things in life, this is the roughest.

I put down my dog about 8 years ago and "buried" him under an apple tree I then planted in the yard. We don't live there anymore, but every time we visit our old neighbors we say "hi" to him.

It's a good time of year to plant a tree...

Sorry to hear Michelle/Joe. I dread the day we lose one of our pets.

When this day comes for me it will be the worst day ever. As I said before I can't choose between my boy Hank or my wife. That's not being mean at all that's how much he means to me. My heart aches for you and creepy.

I haven't stopped crying in 2 days and this is probably the biggest loss I have ever encountered in my life.

growing up, there was no structure or family and this damn dog has given me more life skills than any other human in my life. he taught me love, compassion and forgiveness just to name a few.

I kept thinking about this thread and tearing up today at work. My boys are getting an extra treat and a hug tonight. Go get a new puppy, it feels like you are cheating on the old one but it will put a smile on your face. My last dog that passed I got my golden, Charlie, the same day.

Wow...

This described my upbringing and relationship with my dogs to the t. I lost it after reading that

We have two other dogs, Rufas' mate and his son.
Grrr (his mate) has been slouched on the floor in the same spot for most of the day.
Bringing another dog into the house would probably kill her.

He really was surrounded by people who care and got to go to sleep with the 2 people who love him most in the world and now you both have one of the most loyal and loving guardian angels anyone could ask for. Love you both

it would.

some may say it was just a dog. but, Rufas was and exceptional creature. from the time i brought him home as a pup he was the most even tempered, well mannered, obedient, loving thing i have ever had the pleasure to have in my life.
this damn dog was a blessing to us both and taught us how to be good humans.

i feel lucky to have had the 12 years i did with him, i'm a better person because of it.

but today, i'm a fucking mess.

I'm sorry for your loss, animals are so much better than most people. They aren't judgemental, and accept you as you are.
I also applaud you for doing the difficult thing and giving him relief, many folks don't have the strength to do the right thing.

Annie is 15+ and had a stroke lately. She has improved, but that time is near.
